Default Rear speaker - convertible

Has anyone chased down the correct (stock) rear speaker placement - installation for a convertible? I remember it discussed here years ago, but didn't save the link. The search area did not help.

My '68 4 speed came with the rear speaker - fader option, but the wire is just lying in the well with no signs of the original speaker or enclosure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The speaker(s) sat in a type of cardboard box mounted under the well liner and the speaker and cover were installed on top of that. I don't have them in my convertible but may have a pic somewhere. All the major Firebird/Camaro suppliers sell the components.

I looked at all my digital images and no luck. I know I took several pics of a convertible Camaro at a car show one time. Must have been longer ago than I thought and was taken with an 35MM film camera. Will have to dig through my old pics and see if I can find it and scan it.

that's cool. Thanks Dave. I had no idea that the liner was cut out.

Thanks Dave! Now we are getting somewhere. Now does anyone have a picture without the liner and cover installed?

It's been a while since I looked back there, but I don't remember seeing the speaker grill on top of the well liner like that. I'll take a look see when I'm back in town on Wednesday.

Excellent topic! Mine has been missing in my 69 since 84' when my stepfather threw everything away.

Mine still has whats left of the cardboard thingy still in the trunk from the factory. The well liner was replaced in 95' along with a new top.

I cannot do it now but I will see if I can get a camera stuffed up in there to take some pictures.

In the mean time can someone measure where the well liner would be cut? It would surely help so I do not cut up the liner in the wrong places.

Marc

I checked mine out today...wish I hadn't. The speaker, which is pointing to the rear of the car, is just attached to the seat back panel with some clips--no sign of a box, though "Rear seat speaker" marked on the PHS. Now I guess I'll have to look for a box!

That IS very cool.

To bad that cardboard box isn't made of metal. I wonder how big of a 6X9 spreaker you could fit in there?

I now have the replacement rear housing, a refurbished speaker and the screws. The screws do not come with any nuts and the speaker is not threaded.

The shop manual does not show the hardware so I am looking for someone that knows how these speakers were mounted to the housing?

Can the housings still be ordered? I have been considering trying to make the houseing out of sheet metal. It would be nice to have a card board one to use for the dimensions.

Yes - you can order the housings from any of the Firebird parts suppliers.
