A similar service to PHS ever materialise for Cheverolet? I've gota buddy with a 65 Malibu SS that the trim tag was stolen off of and he'd like to know how the car was built.

Is there any hope for him?

What i remember being told - as being said by Mattison - was that he had been approached and offered the chance to do the Chevy stuff .
The data's do still exist .

But its too massive and disorganized and complex - he declined .

He spent years locating gathering compiling and shuffling all the PMD stuff while he was still GM employed - iirc .

Evidently the Chevy stuff would be about 10-fold that effort .
With 0 salary during the effort .
And maybe 0 manpower support.

Then transporting housing filing and getting all the data into operation.
Lot of start up cost and time before it could even become income producing operations.

i doubt they would consider many to be potential caretakers.
Integrity would be paramount concern.

As an X-Chevrolet employee, we were asked by Jim Perkins while he was general manager of Chevrolet Division in 1991 to try and locate where the old Chevy records were. Unfortunately, that program was short lived and it got squashed by a number of then current Chevrolet employees.

Again in 2002, the Chevrolet general manager, Kurt Ritter, commissioned us to look for any and all old Chevrolet records. Our search lasted almost fourteen months and we were able to find a lot of good information on Chevys past. All of that material is currently at the GM Heritage Center.

We also discovered during our search that sometime in the 1991-92 time-frame an employee of General Motors Corp. (not Chevrolet) was in charge of disposing non-essential materials held by the company. This person discovered that Chevy had an off-site storage facility that they had been leasing for years. When they learned that it was old microfilm beyond the seven years that needed to be retained, a scrap order was issued. That material was the old Chevrolet microfilm build records! It was destroyed out of stupidity and not to cover-up anything else!

That is the true story on the Chevrolet records!

Mike - the only other hope is if the car was built in Oshawa. GM of Canada has build information for those vehicles either built in Canada or destined for Canadian usage.

That's how I got the build information for my Chevelle.

The truth isnt pretty - but glad we have the real facts about it.

Must have been dated info - that was even pre-dated when given. lol

Sounds like it had "some" truth , that grew into half-truthes , and then sorta took on some other residue along the way .

My brother spent 25 years researching and documenting original owner Chevys from 1959 to 1974 with a goal of developing a comprehensive decoding service for Chevrolets. He launched the website about 1.5 years ago, I posted about it on this site. He went out of his way to state emphatically that his site (Classic Auto DNA) was a decoding service not an authentication service like PHS. He also put a lot of stuff on his site and reports warning about potential fraud, restamps, etc. His site even provided photos of original trim tags (from original owner verified cars) and stampings from various assembly plants to help people avoid "made up" cars. His serevice just never took off because a lot of his info is available if you buy all the right books.
During his site development we went to a large well-known auction and attempted to decode cars that were presented as "numbers matching" etc. We decoded (148) 1959-1974 musclecars - Impalas, Chevelles, Camaros, Corvettes. Out of those 148 cars presented as "numbers matching" we found 37 cars where the trim tag matched the current paint/trim/options on the car and had original stampings on the block. It was amazing how bad some of the block restamps were done. Once you know what to look for, they are not hard to spot.
For all those that commented on how there would be a lot of unhappy Chevy owners if there ever was a service to authenticate their car.....you are absolutely correct. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on where you sit, that will never happen.

Alvin has provided the link to the free .pdf file downloads of information kits, as originally shown in post #7. These are generic production details regarding RPO and content for the various GM models. They are typically between 100 and 200 pages long, so you'll want to click on a sample vehicle of interest to check it out.

For 77 and newer vehicles you can purchase the actual invoice (including selected RPOs and pricing) for your specific vehicle. For $50 and your VIN you get a document that looks like this:



Notice they spelled my name wrong 26 years ago when I ordered this truck.
