Strange Grinding noise 69 GTO
69 GTO.
A strange Noise is coming up through the transmission tunnel where my shifter mounts to the transmission. This started happening after I installed a new clutch and M22 Muncie. We put the rear axles on jack stands and drove through the gears and the noise was not there. When the wheels are on the ground and the car is driving on the road noise comes back. The noise does not happend all the time. It appears most in 3rd or 4th gear when running around 2000 to 2500 rpm. It is not there during steady driving at a constant rpm, but only during mild acceleration up around 2000 to 2500. Here is the youtube video of the sound. You will definately know when you hear it. You're pulling our legs, right? If not, the Muncie M22 is also known as the Rock Crusher tranmission, so called because the gearsets have less twist in the gears than an M21 which gives greater tooth contact and allows more torque to be transferred than a gearset with more twist. The trade off is noise. If you've never heard an M22. it might concern you. This is normal for them. You won't hear it on jackstand because the driveline isn't under load without road contact and you're also farther away from pavement so no bounceback.
Please tell us you're kidding? and good score on the transmission. Quite desirable. |

Big bore watch the whole video that is not the sound of an M 22 it is the sound of something grinding. The sound doesn't show up until later in the video

Thats sounds like an M-22 to me.

Did you guys watch the whole video? That horrible grinding noise cant be what a normal M22 sounds like.

I heard the noise you are talking about at the :45 mark or so. Never had a rock crusher but it sounded like something was getting ate up for about a second or two.

Did you replace the trans mount? Cross member isolators? M-22 wouldn't be noisy at a certain rpm/load any one I drove was noisy all the time. BTW nice ride BOSS

Well I did some research and other guys are reporting a similar sound with a metallic dual disc clutch, Mcleod RXT. Sounds like bolts rattleing in a coffee can in the 1800 to 2000 rpm range. Apparently its normal.
Pulled trans tongiht and the clutch, pilot bearing, and throw out bearing all look fine. Not strange wear marks on the input shaft. Last edited by jtwoods4; 04-09-2013 at 11:20 PM. |

Which throw out bearing did you use, a short one or a long one. To me it sounds like the throw out bearing is just barely hitting the pressure plate & it's ratteling againest the plate fingers. Where does the pldel come in ?? Is i close to the floor or clost to the top of the travel. You will get that noise if the clutch is not ajusted correctly. It shoul engauge about 1 1/2 to 2 inchs from the floor. If it' at the top the throw out bearing will bounce gainst the pressure plate fingers giving you that noise, same thing if you have the wrong throw out bearing installed too.

I already checked throw out bearing and clutch adjustment. It is adjusted correctly in the engagement is one and a half to two inches off the floor. I did some research in the issue is with the McLeod RXT twin disc clutch. The clutch is rated at 1000 horsepower and if you are doing mild city driving and at low rpm the sound will happen around 1700 to 2000 rpm. My car is setup for road racing. More aggressive driving does not make the sound
By the way I am using a McCloud adjustable throw out bearing. It is adjusted at the middle setting. Clutch fork pivotball and Rod are all adjusted correctly with the correct clearance |

Sounded like grinding noises in the 40 second range on the clip but the rest sounded normal.
