Hi all,
Planning to replace the rear control arm bushings in my judge soon. The moog parts are more than twice the price of store brand stuff. Do you thing there is really a quality difference here or would I be paying for the name? Thx

Depends if you want rubber or the urethane bushings. Personally I like the urethane bushings better..... and they last longer too.

Gentlemen:
I used an off-brand suspension parts for the restoration of my 1989 Ford Bronco. The original parts lasted 21 years of wear and tear and approximately 65 K miles. Five years later - after the complete rebuild, I was doing the entire front end again. Could not keep that Bronco between the lines at 65 MPH. Lesson - Cheap steel / Cheap rubber equals replacement in 15 K. Never again - buy quantity parts and only install them once. I have used Moog part for three complete rebuilds. I have use had good luck with Moog parts - fit right, wear well. My 2 C |

Store brand is usually cheap Asian garbage. Go with Moog, you won't regret it. I work part time in the parts business and often I won't buy our brand. I get to see first hand the crap that is being made and sold. I don't blame the store, when the shops call they're asking about price not quality.

Rule of thumb: If it is hard to replace, use quality parts.
When I was at Moog school in St. Louis in the 80's they showed us cutaways of their parts vs. competitors. I was convinced.

Great point. But, like most all brands, aren't current MOOG parts Mfg'd overseas?

According to Wikipedia their principle manufacturing is in the U.S. with facilities in various other countries. Recently put a set of moog rear coil springs on my GTO to replace a set I bought from Ames. Definitely a big difference in the stance. The other set had about 6k on them and the car was sagging and leaning to the right.

EVERY part nowadays is a crap shoot. In my experience, Moog parts aren't what they used to be twenty some years ago. The hardware that comes with the parts rust easily and the rubber boots deteriorate prematurely. In my opinion, Moog is no longer better than anybody else out there supplying parts made in China. And I USED to swear by them. Moog is still popular today simply because all the competitors are no longer in business, NOT because they offer a superior product.
With that said, Moog products will usually fit just fine and will get the job done, IF, you only use your rig occasionally. Daily use will promptly reveal their shortcomings. |

Moog has the name, clearly, and at one point they were "the" manufacturer for suspension parts. Times have changed tho.....
I like Raybestos professional grade from some things, as they were clearly better engineered for some items, others Moog were better. China/Asian made parts are now the norm from any manufacturer, case in point, the engine mounts we all have to deal with. Price isn't always an indicator of quality, but it goes a long way when presented with multiple options for the same item from different companies. Speaking of Asian made parts taking over....I just "fixed" my fridge, wasn't cooling like it was supposed to, condenser fan had gone out. A 15 year old GE Profile. Got the new fan in and it was identical to the original in every way, body dimensions, materials, part number, font, etc., all except for being stamped "made in China" as opposed to "made in USA". Even the stamp font "made in" was identical. Oh well, it works, time to see if the new one lasts 15 years.......

Unfortunately can not add any up to date info, but spent 8 years working as a chassis engineer for DANA’s Chassis division, leaving in 2002. Raybestos was one of the brands.
(Started out DANA's Chassis division, then Brake and Chassis div. when DANA bought Echlin, then DANA sold the group to Affinia so now it is Affinia Global Chassis Division) Short answer, Moog was the number one manufacture that we benched marked against. They were a really good product. Even today, I will still only use Moog or Affinia’s parts. Just had to put upper b-joints in my GTO and I used Moogs. I have seen just too much junk out there fail very quickly on tests.

When my pal was restoring his 71 454 Chevelle about 5 years ago he used all Moog steering and suspension parts. The lower ball joints failed in less than 1000 miles. On the other hand, the Moog parts he replaced those with on warranty are still good along with the rest of the parts.
