Correct radiator cap for 69?
Could someone post a picture of what the correct radiator cap looks like for 69 please?
I have a reproduction that is 14 years old and wondering if they have changed or perhaps better since then. Going over some last minute details for concours class Dayton and am curious to see if mine is the right one as I was told mine isn't. Thank you.

Mark......on another note, Ames just came out with the correct
gas cap for 69 GTO's. The one that vendors have been selling for years is not correct. I just got one for my car.....it looks awesome! |

Yes indeed, it is quite nice and finally correct, picked up one a few weeks ago.

I still have the original cap that my 69 Judge came with and the original cap from the 69 LeMans that my Dad purchased new when I was 9. (He kept that car many years.) The cap that im4darush posted is very close to the 2 originals that I have. The flat rivet looks right, but the fonts are not a perfect match to these originals. On my originals, "TURN TIGHT" and "REMOVE SLOWLY" use taller letters forcing the arrows closer to the inside of the cap--right to the edge unlike the repo.
That said, it is a very nice reproduction. Fonts are very often not perfect on these repo's. I would buy one and use it. I also wonder if the original caps were plated this brightly. Many of our original parts used silver cadmium and people are now using silver zinc which is much brighter. But there is little we can do about that if this is the best repo out there. The first repo that I ever saw (and I believe the first one) was I believe at the 1991 Louisville GTOAA convention where Milt Robson first brought his red 70 RAIV Judge convertible. That repo did not use a flat rivet so I believe it is not correct--still have that cap too.

My complaint about the repro caps is that the quality of
the plating on them is terrible. They look old and tarnished right out of the box. Because of this I use a stock GM cap from the 80's and 90's on my car most of the time that is very similar in appearance and is made out of stainless steel which you can polish to a beautiful finish. I have a repro cap that I use at shows like the POCI convention where absolute correctness matters, but I prefer the look of the stainless cap otherwise. |

That newer cap is a better product than mine, a 12 plus year old repro. I ordered one to pick up at the show. Winston and Bet Winner are correct on the finish, way too shiny compared to the originals but the new ones are all we have.

The correct ones just came out. If you bought one
two years ago it is not correct. Sorry, I don't have a pic of the new one. The incorrect ones they were selling have a tab in the middle that sticks straight up vertically from the top of the cap. The correct ones do not have this tab. |
