I would like to clean up my engine bay by removing the stock A/C box and fan assy. I have no intention of getting my a/c operational and would rather convert back to just the oem heater assy only or put a block-off plate on the firewall and make up a custom heater with an aftermarket kit. Are the holes in the firewall the same for an a/c vs a non-a/c car? Anyone done anything like this? I would like to open my hood and have all focus just be on the 389 Tri-power, not the a/c assy. Thanks!

If I can get a picture to post it shows what we did to eliminate the A/c and heater to clean up the fire wall. After removing to blower assembly we bead rolled a piece of sheet metal to make it look stock. Welded the piece in and finished it off. Looks like it came from the factory that way.

Thanks Jim, that's exactly what I'd like to do! I love a clean engine bay that directs the eye right to the engine. My cousin is a body man and is amazing with a bead roller and sheet metal. Any pics would help. I'm just trying to see what I'm getting into before I start unbolted things off my driver. Did you just go without a heater now?

Derbs, the firewall equipment openings as well as the outer firewall sheetmetal differ considerably for an A/C car from a non-A/C car. It's surprising how different they are and how much extra stuff hangs on the firewall for an A/C car.
Later I will post a pic of an 'empty' A/C firewall. One cool thing (literally) about the conversion you're considering is that you'll gain a port for cold, forced cowl air. Mounting the non-A/C box will also require fabricating a sheetmetal plate.

Derbs24: Thanks for the compliment. Given that I live in scalding Florida we decided to take the heater assembly completely out. But given that you live in the frozen tundra like Matt {Engine-Ear} I can certainly understand the need for a heater. I bet your cousin can fab up something for you.

Thanks guys, exactly what I'm looking for. I have a fella looking for some A/C parts so this may be my chance to help out a Pontiac brother and push my car in the direction Jim went.
Hey Matt, how about our weather? 70 and sunny. As my Dad says, "good Pontiac weather". |
