Default reusing Cometic gaskets

I have a set of Cometic gasket I ran on a motor that had around 80 passes before the block cracked # 4 main saddle. Old motor had cast iron heads new motor will have Edelbrocks.

Dumb question/ dumb move here: I installed a brand new set of Cometics that I coated with copper coat before I installed and torqued them down on my new build when I discovered that the E heads pushrod holes were not clearanced. So when I finally pull the heads back off to fix that issue, what do I need to do to them before reinstalling them? Just coat them again or thoroughly clean the gaskets of the old coating then reinstall. I know the answer but I'm curious what other do when the re-use them. The motor has never been fired yet.

I will add one more note, keep the gasket with the original head, I also would not re-use the gasket if the head was re-surfaced while the gaskets were off.

If you call cometic they will tell you not to coat them. I have coated them too. but I tried not coating them and I still have the same one on a year later and I run a turbo with 25psi.. just passing on what I was told....

Never found any gain coating them - they're coated when they arrive. If reused however I'd coat them as the original coating is pretty sketchy after removal - I've used copper coat and red spray tack with equal success. Brakekleen will remove the original coating as well if that's a goal.

What's key is a smooth/mirror finish on the heads and block - no cutter marks.

I was told to clean them off and spray them with SILVER spray paint. It worked just fine for me.

I was told to lightly coat them with Ultra gray . The machine shop that has been building sprint car motors for the last 30 years wont assemble without it . I have done this the last 2 time with no problems .

I've reused them but only with the same heads on the same block and had no issues. Changing heads or block with used gaskets may work but something I wouldn't care to try.

I have reused them with out coating them and never had a problem... If it makes you feel better then just coat them. Either way you will be fine...

Any body reused Cometics going from E heads to iron?

Is there a way to tell how thick the gasket is? They are new to me. Came of a motor that had never been fired.

I've used and re-used Cometics switching blocks & heads and never coated them. Never had a problem either. Usually these are anywhere from 11:1 - 13:1 compression, n/a motors.
