Default Dyno'd my son's 434

Last week my son Jake and I finally got to dyno his 434 pump gas engine that will be going into his 67 firebird. The car is getting mini tubbed, mono leafs, cal-tracs and a set of 295/55/15 drag radials. It's also getting 4 wheel Strange disc brakes and a Tony Orts style 4" cowl fiberglass hood. The trans is a TH-400. Jake is 15 right now and has already paid off his bird. (I went 50/50 with him). He wants to use the car as a street/strip car for his high school years. Jake speced the build from the beginning when he was 12. He bought a 67 400 block from Hooter back then. Over the next 3 years, here is what the combo turned out to be:

400 block bored to 4.155
Hard blocked to the freeze plugs
4 bolt Billet splayed mains installed
Scat 4.00 " crank
Callies 6.8 H beam rods
Diamond pistons
Total Seal file fit rings (gapped for 150 shot)
Canton 15-452 oil pan
Butler crank scraper
Edelbrock 72 cc Heads (ported by Jake) finished by Calvin Hill
309 cfm @ .600 lift, PAC beehive springs for solid flat tappet, 10.87:1 comp
Howard's solid lifters with oiling hole
Butler .116 wall pushrods
Mega brace installed (for future roller build up)
Comp Cams solid flat cam 254/262 @ .050 .615 lift
Victor intake gasket matched
Holley Ultra HP 850
MSD Pro billet distributor

Jake assembled the engine with my guidance. All the machine work was done by Goodwin Competition in Omro Wisconsin. Todd Goodwin used to successfully campaign a Dodge Viper in NMCA Pro Stock years ago. Jake went into the dyno session hoping to break 550 HP. I thought it might pull off around 575 HP if we did everything right. Well, it did much better than we anticipated!! After break in, the 434 was only pulled to 5200 to get things going. It made 544 HP @ 5200 first pull !! On 91 octane. No vacuum pump yet, box stock Holley, and only 32 degrees of timing. Jake & I were grinning from ear to ear. At this point we looked at each other and thought we might be able to hit the number we secretly hoped for! After more tuning we got 602 HP/6000 and 577 TQ/4800 on 91 octane!! At this point, we installed the Moroso 3 vane vacuum pump, bumped timing to 37 degrees, and poured in VP 110. The last pull we spun the little 434 to 7000 rpm and it turned out 612 HP/6000 and 573 TQ/5200. The wildest part of the pulls, was the horsepower never dropped off after 6000 rpm more than 1 HP. We got data to 6700 after the 7000 rpm pull. Needless to say Jake and I were more than happy with the engine! Here is a video of that 7000 rpm pull.

Dyno sheets to follow soon.

Great accomplishments for father and son! The results speak for themselves but the fact that your son paid for his share, carried the load, ported his heads (!) and has been focused on this the last few years should make you both proud.

I'm a few thousand miles from you but I am pretty sure I can see you beaming with well deserved pride for him.

Very impressive, especially with a flat tappet cam! Super father/son project...you and your son have every right to be extremely proud.
