Today I needed to move my 65 Catalina to get a 2000 V6 Mercury Cougar into garage so that I can fix a blown head gasket. I have not started the old girl in probably year.
My ten year or son Zach came out and wanted to help. I charged the battery, poured a little gas down the carb and she fired right up. I backed it out of the way and just left it idling to let the battery charge while I pulled the other car into the garage. Zach followed me back over to the Catalina. I took him behind the car and said just listen. We listened to that sweet sound of Pontiac via dual exhaust. I explained to him that this is what cars are supposed to sound like. I told him to hop in so that we could pull back up to the garage. Once he got in he didn't just want to go thirty feet, he wanted to go for a ride. So I took him for a quick spin. He had a big ole grin on his face and he yelled out "this is cool!". I love that kid.

Teaching him to enjoy the sounds and smells of classic Pontiac V8 exhausts. Excellent!

The time you spent with him today he will think about and brag about to his friends for weeks. Keep it up and he will repay you as a fine young man that remembers the time his father spent with him.

My dad wasn't much of a car guy - he had a string of Corvairs, a Mustang II - by the time he could afford Oldsmobiles, they hadn't made a decent car in 10 years.
I had a friend growing up with a dad who bought and sold '60's Mustangs. That was close enough to get me into the hobby. (and interested in real muscle cars.) I started bringing my kids to shows and driving them around very soon after bringing them home from the hospital:

Getting your kids involved while they're young is a sure way to get them into the hobby! Let them help any time they show an interest. If you chase them away they'll resent the old cars.
My kids have been involved with the cars since they were little, yes even my daughter. Here's a pic of my son pulling his first motor when he was 3- And now we're going to pick up his very own Pontiac tomorrow! A 1977 Bonneville with a Pontiac 350 under the hood and only 29,000 miles on the odometer!

My son took on his first project on his Bonneville today... replacing the water pump. He did a great job with minimal assistance from me. The best part, though, was when his sister came out of the house to go shopping with Mom- she came over to where we were working on the car and said "I love the smell of working on old cars! It reminds me of my childhood!"
