Default Steering Box

Saw a ad on craiglist for a 1979 TransAm power steering gearbox Quick ratio/ High Effort.
Will this bolt up as the ad states to a 1965 GTO, if not what would it take to make it work? Thanks for any info.

Same GM/Saginaw box used on many GM models....will be a direct bolt-in...also, some boxes on Jeeps are the same...you can also use the G-body 1984-87 Monte Carlo SS PS boxes.....here is the article on them:

You'll lose turning radius using a F-body body in an A-body.

Will it be a real noticeable loss of turning radius or some thing that I can live with?

Compared to the turning circle on your 65 you won't notice the difference. But you will see a big difference in the way the car drives, it will be like driving a completely different car. It will drive so much better. But don't pay over $ 50.00 for that box as you can get just as good of a box from any junk yard out of a Grand Cheerokee, which usually cost about $ 50.00.

Any loss of turning radius sucks , as when u turning / turning around / or parallel parking is when it will suffer . As for the way the car drives it will have a tendency for the front end to get very ski-dish , as any slight movement of the will cause a moderate amount of steering movement . Try it if not to your liking , can always change to a different box . Had a 2 /3/4 lock to lock box i my 65 , was impressed at 1st. but then reality set in loss of turning radius / very sensitive to movement of the steering wheel .

You will notice quit a big difference in turning radius. I tried it years ago. Parking lot sucks with it! Just get the correct one.

In the last few posts it says you'll lose turning radius & the steering will be a lot more sensitive, well thats why your changing the box so it will fell more sensitive & again the lose of turning radius will be less then 5% & as far as para parking it won't be noticeable unless you don't know how to park. I changed mine in my 68 bird & never found it any harded to park it, but I think I may have para parked it only a couple of times. I didn't make a habit of parking it that close to anyone. I used the box out of a 87 T/A & yes it was more sensitive but thats what I wanted, I wanted it to have more road feel.

Being born & raised in the suburbs of Phila. trust me i know how to parallel park . Tell me how the road feels when you wreck it . I would not use a box that is real tight [2 3/4 - 3 3/4 ] they have internal stops and do not even come close to allowing your suspension to contact the factory stops on the steering arms , 4 1/2 lock to lock is good upgrade .

For your '65, you will be much happier with a 12.7:1 Saginaw '93-'98 Jeep Grand Cherokee box, '91-'96 Caprice police car or Impala SS box. I run a '96 SS box in my Pontiac police car, and it is day/night over the factory straight ratio "firm feel" box from 1976!

Unlike the T/A box and some others, the stops for the Jeep box are almost exactly the same as the original. Should not have any significant change is turn radius.

You'll be happy with the way it drives when you get it on. Your not going to have any of the problems that the other had stated, There are a lot of us out here that have the same swap with no problems. I think he just may need some driving lessons , or likes sloppy sterring.

Did the same swap to my 65 GTO. It sucked...You will notice the reduced turning radius.. It will be such a PITA. The sensitivity is unbearable...With that big steering wheel and barely adequat suspention geometry...You better not try any evasive manuevers...Just get the right boxfor the car.
