Question How many of your collector cars run/drive and would pass state inspection?

We had a conversation while out to dinner this weekend about how many cars I have & how many would pass a state inspection. Many of us have several cars, inventory sometimes changes, but of the current ones - how many are running & driving well enough to pass a state DMV inspection. Running & driving can be an intangible - but passing a state inspection is not.

Mine is currently 7 out of 10 that would pass today - year range is 1968-1997.

No state inspection here either, but as far as I know all my cars would pass if there was one.

Drove it 100 miles early Saturday morning. Would it pass a state inspection? Dunno. Never had to put a car through one, so I'm clueless what they are looking for. If sounding good and hauling ass are on the list, it would pass.

No State inspections here in CA, either. But both my GTO's and my '15 Ford are currently registered and in use and 100% roadworthy. The GTO's have never even been off the road or out of commission....in use since they were built by Pontiac.

Only familiar with NY DMV. $10 per year for my 68's and it is only for a safety inspection (brakes, lights, etc) and not tested for emissions (emission/safety inspection for other cars/SUV's are $37 per year). It's a minor inconvenience (thousands of inspection gas stations or repair shops) but since my family is also sharing the road it's a small price to pay. Keeps the real POS cars off the road! Of course if I was 18 again I might feel different as I am sure I drove a few un-roadworthy cars back then. Usually 1/4 mile at a time and was only really concerned that they went straight and stopped.

Not really a collector car but a real GTO that I drive.

1972 GTO with a roll cage, 535, 5 speed manual with a vertigate shifter, all original sheet metal and glass (except for hood), full stock interior (including front buckets and back seat) only missing arm rests on doors (to fit cage bar and stock seat). All lights, wipers, radio, etc work.

Tagged (NYS Historical plates), insured and inspected ( safety only required). And no I don't know or have a relationship with the place that inspects it. I left the stock seat belts in along with the 5 point harness because the 40+ year old seat belts are legal...while the new re-certed every two years harness is not.

I drive it to cruise spots and trailer it to the track.

Mine passes every year, why take the chance on a ticket in NY.
I have mine done in November just before it's put away for the winter,so that in the spring it's all set to go.

I should also mention that my wife's 400/4spd/3.90 1971 GTO is not inspected.

But that is because it is apart and being restored...as it has been since 1988.

My 15 year-old soon has asked if he can finish it....but only if he can "murder it out". My wife is considering his offer.

No inspection in WA but my Formula has current tags, everything works and I drove it about 15 miles from my house to a storage locker a couple weeks ago.

The '73 has no drivetrain or interior in it at the moment, so guess not.

Used to live in Virginia. Passed every single time. Now if I had to get an emmissions test, I doubt the 462 would pass...

That was really the intention of my question - was it safe enough to pass a safety inspection. I've had a few & ridden in even more cars that should not have been on the street - like gas can for tank with fuel line running out the passenger window....you get the idea.

When living in Illannoyoise and they had the gestapo emissions inspections the Firebird passed all but the first try. Had some friends that helped me "tune" it to get to pass and it did barely each time. Here in Texas I ave it registered "Antique/Classic" and there are no inspections.

The car has always been factory.

Chris, you do realize that the state of CT hasn't done safety inspections on cars in 10 years or more...

Illinois only test cars that have a OBD2 for emissions now, basically any car built after 94/95 , it's a plug and play thing now.

About 9 years ago when they still tested all cars for emissions my Formula failed, all I did was put my Carb on that was built by Cliff when I got it back and it passed with flying colors. Right after that I put Antique plates on it and was exempt.
