I thought the Pontiac "hybrid" 10- / 12-bolt axle was '65-70... wasn't there a big change for corporate standardization in '71?

Default Change

To my understanding the difference in the gear sets is that the pinion gear has 30 splines on it for 71-76 and the 65-70 has 28 so you would have to use the 71-76 pinion yoke on the 65-70 cars if using the 71-76 Gearset. Also the axles are "C" Clip on the 71-76 versus bolt in for 65-70.

could swear a '65-70 P series pinion is 30 spline, will ck fit on a 12 bolt or 8.5 10 bolt pinion (both 30 spline)..

So, could I use the 342's on a pre 71 carrier by changing the pinion yoke? Or do I need the 71-6 Posi and the c-clip axles?

Default 3.42 Gears on pre 71 carrier

Ragtop Man, I called PY Member MONZAZ who's name is Jim and he said the 71-76 3.42 Ring and Pinion can be used on the 65-70 carrier with just changing the pinion yoke. All the 65-70 axles are bolt in so you won't need the C-Clips. You will need a ring gear spacer if your carrier is for 2.73, 2.93.or 3.08. If you have the 3.23 and lower carrier you dont. I have 3.42 set-up in my 73 Grandville and had to use the spacer. I can call Brad at Fabcraft just to verify what Jim told me.

How hard are the 3-series Posi carriers to come by? Do the spider gears now for sale do the trick to simulate the posi? They seem like a good solution, but cost nearly as much as a carrier. How hard are they to find? Not dragging on 10" slicks, but I do peel out of ice cream stands on a regular basis

Default Spider Gears and Carrier

Not sure about the spider gears. That's a Question for Mr MONZAS. The 3 series carriers are hard to come by. Better chance with a 2 series and a ring gear spacer. Like I said I have that set-up in my 73 Grandville and it runs low 12's in the 1/4 mile and never had a problem.
