Default 71 trans am RUST FREE project resto.

I picked up this TA a few months back on ebay. 71 white black deluxe four speed car. The car was a little rougher than I though it would be but I got some nice parts with it. Instead of doing the smart thing and parting it out I've decided to restore it.

This is going to be a budget resto. I'm going to use as much repo stuff as I can on the car. I will use original parts if they cost me less to restore and if the repo parts suck. There are a lot of good repo parts on the market and I dont mind using them. I would like to have the car finished for the MCACN show next November.

The good. Frame rails look good and the rocker are ok. I did get one original fender with the car that had a good brace.

The bad. Needs lots of floor work, trunk floor is shot. Tail panel is shot. Outer wheel houses and drop offs are shot, Quarters are shot. Dash has some rust in the corners. The roof most likely is shot. Doors are shot. I could go on and on but I think you get the picture.

Here are some before pics.

We started with the floor last week. New parts from D&R since they are local and I know the guys real well. Would like to have the floor in by the end of the week and then move on to the back of the car. Repo floor looks good. There are a few differences but for the most part looks like a nice piece. I hope it fits ok

Yes the rust was free with the car. The car was on ebay in September. The car came with many NOS parts and the previous owner wanted to see the car restored and I gave them my word that I would do it and not part it out. I really like the HO cars ecpecially four speed non ac cars. I wish I could post a link to the ebay ad but it looks like ebay already got rid of it. I'll try to post some more pics as we get the floor in. I'm lucky that I have good help on the car. If I had to do everything on my own it would never get done. I have a buddy that is on vacation for a few weeks who worked in a body shop for many years helping with the big sheet metal work. He's good not great. Perfect for this car.

There is all different levels to this game........and cars.

They all don't have to be perfect......so few made and so few left....

Personally,I enjoy building a "less than perfect" car MORE than striving to make one nicer/better than NEW.

Just spent the last 3 months puting together a 71 T/A that has been partially disassembled for the last 15 years......not a terrible car & not a real nice one,EITHER.....but right now it runs & drives....needs paint, but has excellent "patina" & the whole deal was really satisfying/enjoyable....

If & when I sell it....the next owner can take it to the next level,if he chooses...

It's a "real" car again....

Feels good to get them back on the road. Congrats. I agree that not every car can be
perfect. We got the floor in and it seems to fit fine. Hopefully by the end of the week we can have the floor done and move on to the back of the car. Looks like its going to take about 40 hours to do the floor. With the floor out we where able to take out the dents out of the rear frame rails which was nice.

While I'm hanging out on the beach in fl this week my buddy is working on fitting the quarters and roof. Gaps are staring to look good. We left the old tail panel on for now to get the quartets lined up first. I was lucky to get a set of quarters with the purchase of the car.

Thanks to py and Ron Johnson for the tail panel and trunk drops

Amazing. Subscribed.

Where did the rear quarters come from?

Good luck with the project.

Yes I was fortunate enough to get a set of NOS quarters with the car. Roof came from D&R.
