Hello all!

Received some pictures today of what is claimed, and appears, to be a 1971 SJ. It has black paint, black vinyl top... and blue interior.

I'm about six hours from the car's location, so I can't look for the signs myself. But I'm curious what the group thinks - is there any likelihood of this being a valid color combo (did they even offer them that way?), or is it a respray and/or interior swap job (my suspicion)?

The fact that someone slapped "455 HO" stickers on the fenders pretty much call everything about it into question, in my mind. But still, I'm curious if this odd combo was possibly original, or simply born of someone's odd taste and/or what was in their local junkyard.

well, you asked him for pictures so why not the trim tag info? That holds your answer.

I spoke to the owner on the phone probably a month ago, and asked for all the pictures he could come up with. Thought he'd forgotten... but today, those three came in. I asked for more - tag and all - but I suspect they'll be a long time in coming once again.

everything I see on the pictured car was available on the color palette for 1971 grand prixs

For what it's worth, I did notice that the right-hand dash trim had "GRAND PRIX" spelled out in block letters, rather than in script like a '72 would have had (if I recall correctly).

I also see the 140 speedo, which I'm used to seeing on all '71s and earlier '72s; and a tach, which I'm not used to seeing - pretty sure all mine just had a clock.

It's worth taking a look at. You never know, wouldn't it be nice if someone put an HO in it?

SJ would have power, but looks like a crank for pass window. Hard to tell, but might be black carpet.

Carpet does appear to be black. I've never seen a blue interior car in person before... what color carpet would have been correct? (Seem to recall cream interior cars having black carpet too?)

I do see a window crank. Did all SJs for sure have power windows? My '71 SJ has manual windows, but it doesn't agree with the build sheet - swapped in later I'm sure.

Manual windows were available on an SJ.

Everything matches white or black. If you can have a blue car with black interior, why not the inverse?

Wouldn't surprise me if this GP was originally white or adriatic blue & was repainted black.

Have a 71 GP with that same color blue for the interior - I'm the second owner of the car from original purchaser. My interior is original and the color for the carpeting is blue, just a shade darker than the dash and seats so the black carpet in the picture is kind of questionable. Only thing I have trouble researching is mine has seat belts that are all black both front and rear. Wondering what color the package tray is?

The car has the SJ turnsignals in the front fenders and it looks like a full rally SJ dash so I'm thinking its a SJ. Those decals over the signals are a pretty cheesy ad on in my opinion.

The research I've done on mine showed me that my GP was built during the GM strike and explains some of the things I've always wondered about on the car, but damn... a black car with blue interior? Who was on the assembly line- Stevie Wonder?!!

Find the numbers on that tag and let us know.

SAAC2110, would bet if you found your GP's build sheet, it will have the callouts for the blue interior trim. Being incorrectly build with a blue interior would be highly improbable. As the GP's body came out of the body bank, it would have had a blue (flat suede) finished steel dash panel & rear window closeout. The body would have then been trimmed out with '71 blue dash, doorpanels, console.

'71 GP's were built out of Lakewood (Atlanta), Fremont, & Pontiac. On the Lakewood & Fremont built '71's they had a full size buildsheet. Often from these two plants, the original buildsheet will be behind the drivers side door panel. Due to the mid Sept-mid Nov UAW strike, its common to come across such body built '71's with trim tags dated 09A & 09B that were not assembled till late November or December. These body built '71's can often be noted by the month build of the original blue GM compliance sticker in the door jamb & by scheduling date in the lh upper corner of the buildsheet. Pontiac Plant buildsheets are of the smaller variety, & the few '71 & '72 versions I've found were under the front carpet along the hump between the carpet & sound deadener.
