When I bought my T/A, I had a former Pontiac event judge evaluate the car, flew cross-country to see it for myself and then bought it. I ordered the PHS later and saw that there was no 8-track player listed on the PHS even though there was one installed. That player came with the correct wiring for a stereo AM/FM radio to connect but was not connected. I recently had the radio serviced and had that verify person the 8-track player and wiring were correct for my year car.
My questions are these:
1.Since it was not listed on the PHS, then my car was not " born " with the player, correct?
2. Did cars have players added at the dealer and would that show up on the window sticker? I paid for the PHS only, not thinking the window sticker may be different.
3.Does it devalue my car to have a " not born with" component installed?

1) Correct
2) Could have been added by a dealer or at any point in its ~40 year life. Even if added by the dealer it would not show up on the window sticker.
3) Not at all IMHO. I would bet the majority of restored cars have options added along the way. I added a correct AM/FM stereo to mine which came with just an AM radio.

The 8-Track player is very easy to add to any car. Nothing has to be cut or permanently altered other than two holes in the console where the side brackets mount. The indentations are already marked on the console for the addition of the player. Just like Pat, I also switched out my factory born with AM radio for a correct AM-FM stereo. I added a factory wiring harness and factory speaker in the back deck, same as the factory would have done if ordered that way. IMO, most factory bolt on items (options) do not devalue a car, especially if the original items (AM radio in my case) are saved for later reinstallation if desired. However, if I would have cut my dash to install a modern stereo, I would say that may have some negative effect on value.

Lower value? Why? Not even a bad thing to add, but would mean you threw it in the deal. Only if you were the one who bought it and installed. If not keep passing it on to sweeten next deal.

Personally, I think if you're the one adding expensive things. It can be a money loser, if thats what you mean by lower value....

The 8 track Dealer accessory "kit" was plug and play on a Stereo radio... On a Monural radio it required a remote speaker "kit"

Also,as I recall....the stereo (red dot) radio used a specific 8-track adaptor harness.

They both look the same,but wires are configured differently...

Thanks for all the input. The wiring harness is the configuration on the assembly manual for stereo AM/FM radios.
O.K., I will have it serviced and then connect it to the recently serviced radio.

When I ordered my 74 SD I did not order the tape deck. Trying to keep $ down.After placing the order talking to guys at the dealership I wanted the tape deck. Sooo 'we' deceided to order the tape deck through parts and install it. Wiring,deck,sample 8 track ,and speaker came in the box.Plug and play.
