The originals are a bit messed up.Possible to buy new? It is the four nuts that holds the driveshaft(8.2 axle)

I just have regular nuts and lock washers on mine, been that way for as long as I've had the car. What do the lock nuts you are looking for look like?

I've got the same, lock washers and nuts on mine, but I've seen the crimp nuts on them too. You can get them from Mcmaster for a quick reference.
http://www.mcmaster.com/#self-locking-hex-nuts/=qgwev0 click on the "distorted thread hex nuts" on the right column, fourth one down, then chose the 3/8-24 thread size on the left side drop down. the top lock would be easier to install as you'd get a few more finger turns before it binds up and you have to wrench them down, but the centerlocks would most likely be the safer choice. |

no lock tite on u joint straps...they get torqued and thats enough...Ive never seen a 70s car with self locking nuts
why do you need a GM nut? any grade 5 or better and new lock washers work...get grade 8 if ya feel better..gm didnt make the nuts they bought them from a supplier

Wow, McMaster has conical top distorted thread lock nuts ...that's basically what all the suspension components on a GMs use, they are even CAD plated.
These look like the same nuts that are used in a lot of the kits that claim to be the same as original. I've yet to see one of those kits that actually have the same head markings as factory original nuts, but these look as good as any. I see that distorted thread nuts are not "reusable". I wonder how dealers handled that back in the day ...did they actually replace these various nuts when doing a service that required their removal? I've always reused them, they always seem to have quite a bit of locking action still available when I put them back on. JohnnyB |

2. Very difficult to get hands on inch spec bolts/nuts here in Sweden,we use metric. 3. Three of the 8 nuts moves to easy and I don`t want to see my driveshaft flying out the axle, been there when the driveshaft broke off.NOT a nice experience!! |

Never seen a lock nut on one and never use a torque wrench, either. Never lost one due to nut failure. Have torn u-joints in two in my youth, but the nuts held. Common-sense torque.

Lockwashers & nuts early on, then & 7/16" headed bolts (GM 8.5, 7.5, & 8.875 MP series rears) are all I've ever removed.

I think Peje is talking about the nuts holding the axle shaft retainer plates?
