Default Another Black 71 455HO Formula found

I bought this car about 25 years ago and lost my storage and offered it to a friend in Ontario for free if he wanted it . He did so since I was going the 2000 miles to visit and taking my trailer off to Ontario it went . 3 years ago while visiting I seen that the car had not moved since it arrived . We talked about it and agreed if I had an empty trailer on my next trip home it would go with me. So two years ago it went back on the trailer for another 2000 mile trip home . Since the time I bought it 25 years ago I never got a PHS on it and thought I would this week for the hell of it . Boy was I happy to see the results.

Does the car still have any of its original drivetrain? Is it equipped with a 3.73 axle?

Steve,

I believe power steering and power brakes were optional on the 1971 thru 1973 Formulas. Power steering may have been standard by 1974, but I'd have to check my material to be sure. Doesn't your window sticker for your Formula show power steering and power brakes as line items?

wow, that's incredible, usually the 455HO Formulas got loaded with options but that one was clearly built for speed! I know on my '72 the PS and PDB were on the PHS with extra cost but not sure if '71 was the same. Can't wait to see some pics and hear more about it.

Cool car!! But, that special axle would be cool to see that ratio!

The vin seems low for a late model? Was it an early build and a brass hat car sold later?

If only they could talk!

From the information I have, it appears that PS and PDB were optional on all 1971 Firebirds except the Trans Am. So those two features would be optional on the Formula.

I believe that the handling package included 15" rally II's based on the price which is almost twice that of the 72?

That's correct, the 15" Rally II's less trim rings were part of Y-99 package in 1971. Originally, the honeycomb wheels were going to be part of that package but a delayed introduction of the 15" honeycombs forced that change.

That is one interestingly optioned Formula. Right gears, posi, close ratio, HO and no PS / PB (yes they were optional in 71) is crazy and awesome! Someone who had strong arms and wanted fast and zero frills / no extra weight ordered that car. I would guess it could even be 1 of 1 (maybe and who knows) optioned like that. There are other no PS / PB early Formula's out there, but I wonder how many HO's if any.... we will never know.

Pure SD just bought one very similar. 71 Silver, and black. NO PS, PB, 455 HO, Posi, 4 speed, tach and gauges, console, tinted, and radio. Weird for a CA car to not get more options and AC....

Just to confirm.......as others have already...

My 1971 Pontiac Accessorizer (Jan 4/71) shows that (J50) Power Brakes $47.39 & (N41) Power Steering $115.85 were BOTH chargable options on ALL 71's except T/A's.

Notably missing is WU3 Hood Air Inlet....That would have been $85.00 well spent....I would have left out the console and opted for the Ram Air for the extra 25 bucks....

Hopefully ALL or at least SOME of the original drivetrain is still there....

Don't need a radio with an M22.....

Yup, I had the T/A on the brain. Forgot you had to pay for everything on a Formula.
