Default Carlisle GM Nats

well, i ventured out to that today, in the spitting liquid sunshine. was a little sad considering the 50 yr GTO theme, and the sparse participation, but i digress.

was walking down the GTO row and a 70 hardtop caught my eye, a white one. a 20 footer one could say. as i amble on up i notice some unorthodox underhood plumbing..upon closer inspection i see it's turbo'd. no, wait a minute, it's twin turbo'd, in a fashion i havent seen before.

about 2 seconds later i see the really interesting part......

it was a RA5 twin turbo. i had never laid eyes on a RA5 until that moment, and when i did it happened to be a twin T version.

is that a member here, or does anybody know who it might be? was a virginia car, and i have the name, but wont post to protect the innocent.

Very cool car, I think he said he was located in Berryville Virginia. What is the chance of seeing those type of heads twice in the same day.

MANY older gen GTOs didn't show because of the rain. The old gen GTO showfield was laid out in accordance to the registrations and there was much room in each class because they didn't come out. I was really disappointed. Had Saturday's weather been like Friday's, the GTO showfield would have been busting. Friday there was the busiest its been there in some time that was a good sign, then the weather tanked.

As far as the new gen GTOs. The 2 weeks leading up to the show registrations on them were piling in. Again, weather kept many of them away, their show area had a lot of room open.

I went this year for the first time, having only read posts and seen pictures on the show. My dad and I showed up at noon on Saturday and spend the night in Carlisle. We went back on Sunday morning as well from about 9:30 to 11:30.

If you're into the 70's and newer performance cars then this is the place to be. There were modern Camaros, Buick Grand Nationals, modern GTO's, etc everywhere. There were tons of parts and plenty of cars to look at.

Being a full size guy (64 Catalina) were didn't find much. I was a bit disappointed because the ad said 1200 vender spaces, but there were far fewer than 1200 filled (I get it, small print, but it was still a bummer) and many of those spaces were filled with items I had no interest in (how many places can sell the same tin signs that I can get at Hobby Lobby for $5 less?).

We came from CT so we couldn't be there on Friday (work) or much earlier on Sat (we left at 7 am). I don't know if we just missed the "best" of the show or if we were just expecting something that wasn't. I was hoping to see many 50's and 60's GM boats, find some parts I need (such as trim parts), dealer stuff, and meet fellow full size owners to exchange stories and check out their cars. By 5 on Saturday night we realized this might not be the place for us.

There were a few bright spots, I saw two 64 Bonneville 'verts, and spoke to the owner of one of them. I also found the factory shop manuals for the Catalina and got to take dad to Gettysburg since he had never been.

I don't want to be seen as "bashing" the show in any way, it was professional, organized, and huge. I think I wouldn't feel so bummed if it has been called the GM 1975+ Performance Nationals...then I would have saved myself 10 hours (total) in the Grand Marquis.

I talked to the owner of the 70 RAV for a bit. Very interesting car. Let me set up some info first. If you were there early enough you might have noticed a Hudson (Hornet?) parked next to the 70. It too was turbocharged. It had a destroked engine. 265 ci down from the original 308. Flathead straight 8. It threw down 191 rwhp, through a 5 sp overdrive tranny. Funny part is that it was using a British SU carb. That gentleman built both the Hudson and the 70 GTO. They both used what is called restrictive tuning. Meaning that the carb, intake, turbo and piping, and then the exhaust all combine to create enough restriciton that neither car used waste gates or BOV's.
To the 70 now. This was built 25 years ago, and has been in the garage for almost 20 years. The last inspection sticker was from 96. He said he had heard 9 weeks ago that the only RAV was going to be a Carlisle, so he decided to resurrect the old girl.
The owner had a complete RAV engine in his garage, but rather that risk the short block he put the top end on a .040 over 455 short block that has aluminum rods with forged pistons. I do not recall what he said about the crank. It also has a totally wrong for the application roller cam. He said he had ordered a new cam with more applicable specs, but it has not arrived yet.
The only part of the turbo setup, other that the turbos themselves, that was purchased over the counter was the peice that the carb mount on top of. Everything else was all custom frabricated, All tubing was stainless steel and very nicely done.
I do have some pic's on my phone alone with a video of him starting the car and letting it idle. It started right up, no hiccups, no stumbles, black smoke, nothing but a steady choppy idle.
Some of the exhaust tubing used slip fit connections to it had to warm up to be quiet as he says it would normallly be. He did not let it run long enough for me to hear that and you could hear some exh leakage noise in the engine compartment.
When people would ask how much horsepower the engine made, he would just say,,,plenty. He is thing of changing to a numerically lower rear gear ratio as the drive up from Virginia the rpm's on the highway were a bit more than he would care for. He did also say that when going 80, if you stomp the gas it would leave black stripes on the road.
Milt did eventually get over to the car and talk to the owner for a couple minutes, however I was not close enough to hear, nor fast enough for a pic.
