I'm thinking GROUND but first let me say I restored the entire car along with new harness front to back, after getting the motor in and hooking up the battery I went thru a check with all the electrics and everything worked fine, lights, blinkers, brake lights, horn, radio, reverse lights. Started the car let it run, while running I turned the steering wheel to check the power steering ALL fine then shut it off. Tonight I went out to run it thru the gears, jacked it up pressed on the brake and that's when the blinker lights ( both left and right) came on, released the brake put the left and right blinker on and nothing. Could it be the turn indicator in the steering or a bad ground that just appeared?? The steering column is a new IDIDIT tilt. Any suggestions??? Thanks

I would check directional switch first. Brake lights run through switch.

What kind of car are you talking about? Sounds like the t/s switch is wired up wrong. I seem to remember an adapter that needs to be used on some of the tilt columns from the 70's when hooked to a standard column harness. It's been a long time so I don't remember the specifics, but it seems to me that the switch for the tilt column had something reversed in it. Thus the need for the adapter.

When you press the brakes and the emergency flasher circuit is active, ALL the lights light up. Rear lamps, front lamps, dash lamps.

Do your emergency flashers work OK? It could be that the flasher circuit is shorted out or energized yet the flasher isn't working. Then EVERYTHING lights up when you hit the brakes. Try turning the emergency flashers on and then off a couple times by pushing the button in and pulling it out - in case it's stuck or sticking (?).

Check and see if the front signal lamps light up when you hit the brakes. That would be indicative of the emergency flasher circuit tying all the lamps together. If they ALL light up when you hit the brakes, check your emergency circuit flasher. It could be malfunctioning (or missing). I had a 1970 GTO where the emergency flasher was missing and the flasher button was pushed in that acted like yours does. No turn signals, only ALL the lamps when I hit the brakes. Took me a while to figure it out.....

If the dash lamps light up, or all the lamps light up but the emergency flasher circuit is working right, you'll either need the mentioned adaptor or get to swap out the turn-signal switch. Great fun if it's the switch.

Did you change the T/S switch also when you rewired the car? If so did you use the jumper wire (s) that come with the switch as it changes some of the wires to different spot when they get pluged right in. You have to use the jumper or odd things like what your getting will happen. Also make sure you have the gronds that are to go to the dash all clean & on unpainted surfaces. bad grounds cause all kinds of back feed problems too. The dash grounds are always a big problem on 69-72 . make sure the grounds are clean & on unpainted surfaces with the star washers used.

If the brake lights come on when you have a blinker on than you just have a bad bulb that has shorted, so it will be a process of elimination to track it down!
