I'm looking for a correct rear end for my 65 and was wondering if someone could help me out with how to ID a real one. I did a search but I'm still a little confused. As per the PHS it should have an open 3:55 but I realize that finding that code with the correct date code might be asking too much so if I can just get a properly dated one I'll be happy for now.
I understand that the correct casting code is 9779822 but that this casting could also be used on other GM cars so what are some obvious visual clues for the 65 A body rear end? Also what is the date code format, I've heard that is could be Julian or M/D/Y? Where is it located, I thought it was on the back side lower right but from what I've read it's on the front or bottom?
If someone could post some pics that would really help me too.

Read through this. look at my post #8 this is a pic of a 65 housing . this is the bottom of pinion snout. note K (nov) day and 4 year of cast . you can re-stamp code. but this housing had the 64 letter style code for ratio/type stamp style . dont know if this was a anomaly for that date of cast .

Thanks did, that helps. So is it safe to say that on a typical 65 rear end you will find the casting #9779822 and M/D/Y date code cast on the bottom parallel to the pinion shaft? I had assumed that it was on the aft, lower r/h side like on my 70 but I think I'm wrong on that.
Do you have any pics of what this rear end should look like? I'm still a little confused about the configuration of the webs on the sides.
For what it's worth my car was built the 2nd week of May.

Could someone help me clarify these last few questions for me? I'd like to start looking for a Mar-April rear end but before I do I need to know exactly what I'm looking for.

If you do a search on REAR HOUSING in this forum search section you can confirm your thoughts. There has been lots of discussion on this. you can start here. It's always good to get up dated info though as things do seem to evolve even after 50 years.

FWIW, I have a bare 9779822 Diff & Axle Housing Assembly (cast center & axle tubes only).

Cast date is E45. It is very solid condition. It's coded for a Tempest open diff 2.93 ratio (WD). Would clean up and look very nice.

I'd guess shipping it to Alberta from Jacksonville, Fla would be a killer. But PM if interested.

There is a complete 3.23 posi on ebay with the 9779822 cast housing. I believe it is showing the Olds 3.23 locking axle code (SF), not a Tempest code. Dated D235, not bad for you.

Pic of the cast housing looks about as nice as mine, axle tubes look a bit scaly but I've seen worse.
