Default My Dad passed away last week.

For all of you all that still have both parents, tell them how much you appreciate them as many times as you can. My dad has been in the hospital/rehab centers (nursing homes) for 2 months. Went in because he couldn't stand up any more due to severe Gout in the RH knee. Everything just kept getting worse, and I had to go over there 3 times a day to light 'fires" under some of the staff to care for his needs. It ended on November 16th at 11:25 AM EST with me and my brother sitting there. He opened his eyes and smiled a little bit, and then he was gone. I was glad I was there. Bittersweet. He had became inactive since my Mom passed away due to cancer in 2010, and he missed her dearly. Wasn't easy tending to his needs over the past 4 years, but I have no regrets. They were there for me when I was a child, and I think it is our duty to be there for them when they get to where they can't function on their own. He had COPD and Diabetes for years. In the end he had Sepsis, Pulmonary embolism, and Pneumonia that did him in. I could not even communicate with him the last two weeks he was alive, due to him being very confused. The last 24 hrs, he was resting more peacefully than I had seen him in years. Very heartbreaking to loose both your parents but to be cliche' ,his suffering his over.

Sorry for your loss, goatwgn.

I can't wish either of my parents well as you recommend, so I can relate.

Follow your Faith in this trying time and do what you can while you grieve to remember the better place he is no doubt in.

Goatwgn, my condolences to you and your family.

And a word to those that still have their parents. Keep your friends close... but keep your family even closer. You get no second chance once they're gone.

Sad to hear. Lost my dad a few years ago to stroke complications and mom is beginning to showing signs of dementia. It's tough. And you're right. They spent years bringing us up and sacrificed so much in the process....

You should be thankful he was coherent until his passing.

My father had moderate dementia, but after having surgery to install a pacemaker he spent his last year in a fog. It is much harder to watch them slip away bit by bit.

Sorry about your Dad. This is a real tough part of life, and I feel your pain. My dad died in 81 when I was 13, and my Mom passed away in May this year. This is not something you can ever fully prepare yourself for. I hope you have a tight family and good freinds to help work through these though times.

I know exactly what you're feeling because my dad passed away in 2012 after being in hospitals for 4 months. He had pneumonia and other issues and I never spoke to him the last three months because he was in a coma.
Your dad made you the person you are today and for that I'm sure you'll always be grateful.

Sorry for your loss. A pain that never heals. I cant believe it has been almost three years since my father passed. I spent almost every day with him, learned everything from him.Always wanted to be just like him,a great man. Worst thing was I had a conversation with my wife a couple weeks before he died. I told her how I wanted to sit down with him,and tell him how much I loved him,and how I so admired him, respected, and appreciated all that he taught me. I never had that conversation,as I thought I had another 20 years to do it. The biggest regret of my life. I know today when I sit down for dinner,i will surely have a hole in my heart,as I know many of you will too.
