Default WARNING--REPRO VIN TAGS!!

I ran across a guy on facebook today who claims to be making '242' vin tags, not data tags or trim tags, for GTO's. So just a head's up and be sure to get PHS on anything you might be considering purchasing.

I don't know how to, or even if you can capture a conversation on facebook or I would have posted it on here. If anyone needs any further info, feel free to PM me.

A VIN tag is just a stamped piece of metal. I'd think that any good metalworker can whip one up. Remember that PHS goes off only the VIN, so a smart crook will make sure the VIN matches the PHS.

I would recommend turning that facebook user's account in to the authorities.

Most of them were junked or parted out to restore GTOs.

The GTO had the mystique that made people keep them rather than junk them.

Now the LeMans and Tempest aren't often seen, mostly because they weren't seen as valuable enough to save back then.

Restore the best and cut up the rest holds true unfortunately to this day.

What he is doing, if he is doing it, is a felony. He will be in for a rough time legally if he continues with his VIN project. No different than printing counterfiet money. Bad Ju-Ju.

I do know that Pontiac are one the hardest cars to deceive a buyer.

X2.

There are legit reasons to produce a new vin. I've had cars before that had the vin plate rusted through in some places. Now if he's making them for "illegal" purposes then its a different story.

Jerry, here's a link to a free screen capture software program......
http://www.wisdom-soft.com/products/...unter_free.htm

Try it, or do a Search for Free Screen Shot Software. You'll use Print Screen on your keyboard to save screen shots.

I've used FS Screen for years..... get it here..... http://www.flightsimworld.com/downlo...file/1058.html

Make a folder and name it FSScreen. Put the FS exe in that folder. Open the folder and right click on the exe. Make a shortcut for it an place it on you desktop. To use it double click on the shortcut and the program is activated. Use Press Screen to take a screen shot. The screen shot will be in the FS Screen folder and saved as a bmp.

Default Rusty Vins

I have a rusty 70 trans am right now that has a missing VIN tag. I sent the car to body shop 20 years ago to be restored and they completly disambled the car for sandblasting, the place went out of business after messy divorce and when i went to retrieve it they lost the vin tags. I would love to finish restoring the car it is a auto on column car. dont know what to do with it but dont want to part with it.

Must be more cases like mine out there.

Do a title search on your TA's VIN and see if it's still in your name?

It may already be on someone else's plain jane Firebird.

Re-stamp it. If you still have the title in your name just make another plate up and install it.

Or you can get a state issued vin.

They were the ones called on to handle issues like the one you describe, and took it seriously. Go ahead and fabricate that vin plate and try to pass it off. It's a felony, and will cost you the car.
