I am restoring a 65 GTO which was ordered with the front aluminum brake drum option.
I know that in 1966 these drums were painted red but I have not found anything about the color in 1965. Were they painted or left un-finished raw aluminum? When I purchased the car there was no indication that the drums were ever painted. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! |

All the ones i've seen have been unpainted.

Aluminum and cast iron drums were painted red only one year (1966) and only when the car came with the "Rally I Wheel Option".
Otherwise the front aluminum drums were unpainted for 65 and 66. |

Thanks, that confirms my thoughts that they were never painted!

Detailed Aluminum drums on all 4 corners looks great with "open" Hurst style wheels.
Later GM vehicles did offer a aluminum drum for the rear axle, just saying. Not correct but a cool mod. Tom V.
