I'm trying to install the rear bumper on the 72 Formula. When I purchased the car the bumper was wraped in paper as it had been sent out to be re-chromed. Inside the trunk there was a box full of various parts. I believe the brackets are in there, but not sure what I'm looking for. Does anyone happen to have pictures of the brackets and bolts you can post for a 72? Also could anyone who has the 70 assembly manual scan and post the page which shows how it is bolted on? I did a search, but only saw info for a 73 and I understand there is a slight difference due to new bumper regulations that were mandated in 1973.

I dug out a set of 72 brackets, (top), and a set of 73 brackets, (bottom).
They are placed in the positions that they are mounted on the car.
The difference of about 1/2'' in length is apparent, and on the end brackets the hole spacing is offset more to move the 73 bumper further away from the body.

Pictured also are the bolts, from the 72 set, need 10 of each. The stainless capped 3/8'' thread bumper bolts have a 3/4'' diameter head, 3/4'' long under the head, and the nut has a 1'' washer attached. The 3/8'' thread body bolts have a 1 1/8'' washer and are 1'' long under the washer.

The last picture shows a rubber strip that goes on the sheet metal support that is welded to the rear body panel under the filler neck hole. I'm not sure if all years have this, or just 73's, to take up the extra space between the bumper and the body piece. I've only come across one on the cars I've had, a 73.

Brewster/Burgess- thanks for the service manual diagram and the pics. I believe I have the brackets and some of the bolts needed to install the bumper. From the diagram it looks as if the brackets bolt up to the rear facia panel. On the inside of the trunk (on my car) it looks like there are brackets affixed which the bolts most likely go thru to attach the out side brackets you sent pictures of. Is this correct? I'm guessing the stainless capped bolts are the ones that are used to attach the bumper to the outside brackets. Do either of you happen to know if the stainless bumper bolts are reproduced? Earlier cars had that rubber strip as well, but with a different configuration. I believe AMK might have the stainless capped bolts.

The stainless capped bolts are available from a variety of suppliers. You want to make sure you get ones with "low profile" heads as opposed to standard carriage bolts that have a more pronounced head. Here's a link for some for sale on Ebay.

Look at this pic, there are square stick on "paint protectors" used by the factory to keep from scratching car during install. Easily made and worth sticking on your car... My 2 cents..

Could those be body putty 'squares' stuck on to seal up the holes? There's usually sealer between there when removing originals.

They are thin foam, one side sticky, squares from the factory. I suppose they do/could seal the holes as well. I found them very much a good idea, especially on the sides.
