I have been thinking about doing an old school style gasser for a while. There is a shop in town that does some amazing work (original Detroit old school machinist for the OEM's) building this type of car. Attached are some pics of a car that looks to have a decent start. Anybody have any advice/experience doing these? I want something that is safe, can cruise the highway (no interstate speeds), and possible blast down the strip ever once in a while.

Is this yours? Or just one your looking at? Looks like someone has done quite a bit of work to it already.

No offense, but that looks like a caricature of a gasser.
Way too much junk that doesn't do anything! Take your time and look at what is really a gasser, and then make a streetable version. Good Luck with your project. KK |

I hope to present my 56 sometime....no my thread isn't dead. I'm going to pick up the straight axle Tuesday. I'm just taking my time since there isn't much to go by on Pontiac's. Bill above is one of the few with much experience.
My cam came in the other day so I should be able to update the engine back together this week. Some of the bits got painted this weekend. I'm about a step away from hacking the frame off from the steering box forward. (for a reason). http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=765343 |

Yeah I would get rid of the "junk" hanging off it. Kind of looks like a cross between a rat rod and a gasser right now. I have to admit I am a little "young" for the heyday of the gassers but as a kid I built a lot of model cars kits of the gassers. I guess I will never forget when I was about 16 seeing a Candy Apple Red 55 Belair with a chrome straight axle, sitting way up high on all 4 cormers, moon tank on the front, etc. Was always "struck" by that sight.

I am considering taking a look at this car. The guy I know in town has done some work on some very nice gassers. He does a lot of fabrication work for high end builds. I was considering having him take a look at this too make sure it is "right".

The one you posted? I loved to know how they did the headers. What did they use?

Just my own opinion here but at least remove the longer rear shackles and remount the rear end above the springs, sitting high in the rear would be more of a street freak than a gasser, on mine I added in a few extra leaves so it wouldn't sag because of the extra weight put on the rear from the raised front end.
Remove extra cam shaft and piston, piston/skull art from radiator to lose the ratrod feel and go from there... oh and the wheelie bars unless they are really needed. Maybe move the cell inside the trunk or get another tank, part of the reason to have a sumped tank is to gravity feed the fuel pump. And make it Pontiac powered if it isn't already. But most of all just go have some fun with it.

It has a small block Chevy in it now. That would have to go. I agree on lowering the rear. If I had it I would build a early 421 SD "look a like" motor for it. Headers would probably have to be custom fabricated.

At least the owner admits it has a rat rod flair. I have a feeling this will go for less than $15k. I don't think it is "street legal" at this point and that really narrows the market. Might be a good starting point for someone. I did not realize how much of the rear fender lip was removed from previous pictures. I am kind of going in a few different directions at the same time. Attended Mecum auction this past week and that has my head spinning! LOL!
First things first I need to sell either my 67 GP or 67 Firebird. MarkC |

If I can get mine done, it will be street legal, not a rat and I would sell it to you all day for $12,500.

Don't know how it is in your state but in mine you could never legally drive it. Make sure before you spend a lot of money you can drive it on the street without getting stopped all the time.
