Default 68 motor pull

Think I am ready to hook up hoist to pull motor and turbo 400 out . Is there any step by step so I a can make sure I did not over look anything? Will drive shaft just fall out? Just going to put mover blanket under it so it won't get damaged.

Remove the driveshaft.

Trying to pull the engine and trans without removing it first is not the way to do it.

No need for a checklist I don't think. Just LOOK and THINK....
Everything that's going to stay on the car needs to be detached. In addition, first I remove the hood then sometimes I remove the carb and distributor and all accessories like alternator, fan, A/C etc. Tape up the carb and distributor openings. Drain all fluids. Remove radiator and detach the hoses. Detach exhaust down-pipes. Drop the starter. Personally, I like leaving the trans with the car but that's just me.
As you lift the engine, look around at everything to make sure you're not leaving something attached that needs to stay with the car such as wiring, vacuum hoses, fuel line, etc.
As you can see, sometimes I don't even bother to remove the carb and accessories. As I recall though, the starter can get in the way.

I know Greg already mentioned it, but do not forget to remove the radiator.

One bump and it's junk.

Easy to do and gives you a lot more room to work.

Thanks for in out I have done all except starter and distributor removal, I was thinking the dist could get crushed thought I could pull with stater but if you guys think it should go then I will pull. This is a spare motor that I don't need do I will be storing it. I went back and forth on tranny with engine or seperate and decide to go as one , it going out for a complete rebuild, I live in northeast and I had every bolt off this car including exhaust bolt off in two hours And not one striped bolt or stripped bolt which is iun heard off here in northeast this was scal car that sat for 15 year until I bought it and moves out here , well option power windows , ac , auto his hers , convertible, iDisk brakes nice car no rust can't wait to get wife out for a ride. This motor that I am pulling is fine if some one is looking for one just had a ram air three 12 heads rebuilt to go in from 69!lt was not matching number but this engine would be carb to pan and only 10000 miles I was told on it , did sound good .

Definitely remove the starter or else you'll never get it past the front crossmember.

Removing the distributor is what I always do too.

Don't forget the pesky grounding strap from rear of engine to firewall (pass side head - I can't recall). That one is easy to forget. Also, oil pressure sending wire...

Good luck!

Back in the day, I "pulled" a V8 from a 72 Camaro without a cherry picker. I stripped the engine down to the bare block and pulled the trans. Then jacked up the back of the engine until it flopped forward on the ground in front of the crossmember. Gotta do what you gotta do

Drain all fluids. Filter....I think you could take it or leave it.

A lot of the time it's easier if you remove the oil filter and filter adapter, depending on whether you have headers or exhaust manifolds.

It's easy to do and makes maneuvering the engine/trans just a bit easier without damaging things.

Just don't do what I did and forget to drain the tranny, or you'll go thru a lot of kitty litter.

Thanks for the input and I will have it out this weekend. I will pull drive shaft and cover the output so it won't leak, tranny is a mess from sitting close to twenty years so it's going right into shop to be gone over it leaks but shifted good so we will see, another question is I have the dyno sheet with all the stats if I post is there anyone out ther that can tell me what to use for a torque converter? It puts out at crank about 360 hp and 450 lb of torque or should I call summit or jegs and give them the stats again thanks for all the help

Torque converter choice depends on many things, but my advice is never use the tech line at any generic parts warehouse to help pick your converter. Never. Same goes for the camshaft. Use your resources here at PY for picking what your Pontiac needs.

Posting your question in the Pontiac-Street forum would be best to get the most exposure and greatest number of opinions, the '68-'69 forum is best used for model year-specific questions.

You need to outline all of the engine and drivetrain parameters in order to choose a converter that will be the best match for your needs.

For example, if the engine will have a stock cam and if you're going to use the stock rear end gears don't hesitate to use a stock converter.

I always remove the trans crossmember, just one less thing to snag on during the removal. Unplug the kickdown solenoid connection down low on the side near the pan gasket. Remove the transmission dipstick and tube assembly.

You did already drain the transmission fluid by removing the pan, right?

Removing the whole distributor would be prudent, again just one more thing to add leeway to removal and avoid damage to the distributor.

Most of all work slowly and thoughtfully keeping your safety and the safety of any helpers first in mind.

Have a good day tomorrow.

I am going to request the exact opposite as the distinguished b-man; I suggest pulling the motor and tranny separated.

Reason being is they have to be separated in the end anyway, to me that is easiest in the car and pull separate.

You could micro debate this but no thanks, not trying to beat anyone up here.

Another minor issue, to pull together an Engine Hoist Equalizer becomes more relevant.

Which is nice to have regardless.
