Question B-body hitch

Anybody put a class 3 on a 1967 B-body? Where'd you get it?

I had good luck at U-Haul putting one on my 72 Chevy pickup. It was a Reese Hitch. Maybe independents that use Reese is worth a look too.

I've got what I believe is a class 3 on my '67 wagon (so I was told). I'll check and see how it was attached and who made it. It's been used to tow a trailer and car before.

I took a Class 2 hitch off a Bonneville Brougham I parted several years ago. That thing was bolted on at six points. It took forever to get the bolts off without destroying the bumper.

It was chrome but rusted. it may have been Dealer installed when new. That car would have been a beauty if someone had not let her get destroyed by rust. Still saved lots, and lots of parts off her. Unfortunately the 428 HO motor has a big crack right down the main web oil galley. It was a YK block. Only 726 made. I got $16 for it at the scrap yard. :-(

Thumbs up Thanks

Thanks for the link, that looks promising. For some reason the Reese site doesn't even list Pontiac.

I had a company in Phoenix called Quality S install that hitch (they do custom hitches). I could not find a bolt-on hitch for the car (this was probably 12-13 years ago). The hitch is welded to the frame. I towed dozens of cars with that hitch.

This is probably what you're going to find. No one is going to make a drop\bolt in hitch for a 45-50 year old car. Custom install of a "close enough" one is what's going to be necessary.

I've taken off close to half a dozen hitches on big cars over the years and all of them were different in how they mounted and size - none were alike and I know some of them were installed relatively early on in the car's life.

I spent quite a bit of time perusing the specs on various hitch manufacturers sites. The only hitches I found that were wide enough for the frame rails on my '69 Bonnie wagon were the RV hitches. This one had the least amount of drop. It actually fits as if it were designed for it! It sets up fairly tight to the foot well. I don't know how it would fit on a non-wagon.

word is, if U-haul ever offered a hitch for your classic car, they have all the plans and will build a brand new one for ya...

i know of a guy that just bought a new one for a 69 el camino, they built it for him and installed it....may be worth looking into..i know nothing else..he went there talked to them and a few weeks later it showed up

Had to drill 4 holes for the bolts.

I've got to imagine that you'd have to be really lucky to find a U-haul center that would do something like that for you! From my limited experiences with U-haul even straight forward rentals are often a pain in the rear. I can't imagine trying to get them to look up an obsolete hitch for a 45 year old car!

We have a fairly large U-Haul where I live. They installed a class 3 Reese a few years back on my 72 Chevy Pickup, which I think might be as large and the Bonneville. This U-Haul has a service department, not just a few trailers.

The '72 Chevy truck is an easy fit. It is still a current listing for all of the major hitch manufacturers. 60s B-body Pontiac... not so much.

We still have an old time hitch shop, Eckhart Hitches. They only do custom fabricated hitches, all welded. They say the bolt on OEM and store bought hitches are unsafe and break too easily. They leave a hill of broken hitches on their lot to prove their point. Last time I checked they wanted about $375 for a custom hidden hitch, ready to tow. Can do the old style ball and tongue type or receiver which is more practical. Once I get my rear bumper redone, I will probably go with them. I thought their price was reasonable once you add up all the accessories you need plus time for installation.
