Default No Start, No Crank.... Happened 1 time

Just throwing this out there...... I know it is impossible to diag this without it happening....

Was at a local car show a couple of weeks ago..... car has shown ZERO issues of any kind ....

I go to leave the show.... put key in ignition, turn.... no click, no crank.... idiot lights ARE lit on dash, and do NOT dim when I try to crank it..... I just get nothing....

I try many times trying to crank the car...... my buddy starts going for his jumper cables to try that.... as I am thinking that wont work anyway, and it is time to call AAA.....

then.... for no reason..... I turn the key, and she cranks strong and car starts like nothing ever happened.....

I drove straight home..... and tried multiple times to get it to repeat the issue..... to no avail ......

I hate not being able to trust the car to get me home, so I just thought I would throw this out there, to maybe get some opinions....

If I was to throw a guess out there..... my first feeling is the original ignition switch is starting to have issues......

Thoughts?

Thank you in advance.....

My guess of possibilities would be the ignition switch, starter, battery, or battery cables.

What kind of starter are you running? Was the car hot? Cold?

Loose connection at starter? Check all other connections after that one. (I had an intermittent "no start" problem, too - that was it.

I would think maybe a flat spot on the starter & after you tried several time it got past the spot on the starter & started . I've had that happen before. Next time if it does do that try just tapping on the starter with a hammer lightly,,, if it startrs then its a starter problem you ned to replace it. We use to do that to try before we replaced starters. Tapping on it will force the armature to turn slightly & if its that & then starts there your problem. !!! Only thing is you have to wait for it not to start again.

All connections tight....
Power master mini starter....
Battery cables all recently replaced
Engine harness replaced so I know bulkhead connection not corroded
Car only gets driven in perfect weather and otherwise sits in a dry garage

Just don't think it's a starter.... Lights did not dim like it was engaging solenoid....

Ignition switch on the lower part of the column. Since it started after that with no jump, that would rule out battery and cables.
One more thing check the fuse box, make sure the bolt is tight. The box could separate a little from the harness there.

Thumbs down

If you have a flat spot in the armature it won't dim the lights when you try to crank it when it doesn't start. I had my powermaster mini starter do the same thing & I sent it back in to have it looked & repaired. They fixed it & sent it back to me & have had no problems at all. My car also NEVER saw any rain or bad weather ay all & only was driven about 500 miles per year. After the repair it works fine. Mine was doing the same thing , just a little more frequent. I think you have a starter problem. !!

Just had this happen last week... went to go home for lunch.. nothing... battery measured fine.. cleaned some corrosion off the battery terminals.. no luck... finally knocked on the starter with a wrench.. started right up ... only drove it once since then, but still started no issues... I am looking at the starter

Ugh........

OK.... will just have to keep an eye on this then......

Thank you

I had a few issues with a Powermaster starter years ago for something like this..... they ended up replacing the unit with a step higher model..... and all has been good since......

If it does end up being a starter...... I will look at another manufacturer of mini starter....

A Lot of the mini starters have replaceable solenoid contacts that can burn out, most older imports and newer dodge and corvette used them. after starting many times the contacts burn on the battery terminal side of solenoid contact and create an uneven surface between the 2 contacts and the plunger cannot take up the difference causing no crank. Sometimes you get 1 click and no crank issues, eventually it will start after a numbers trys. No saying this is you issue, but worth a look. is solenoid has 3 bolts cover on rear it has replaceable contacts.

Question

Automatic? If so, checked the neutral start switch?

Even then, I wouldn't discount the neutral safety switch.

Does that model car have one of those switches that won't engage the starter circuit unless the clutch is depressed? If so, that is indeed a likely culprit.

Had that happen to me a while back.......the cause was a broken brush spring inside the starter.

Well............

Cannot duplicate the issue.....

I am moving on.... IF it occurs.... I will tap on the starter to see if that makes a difference .......

Thank you to everyone for your advice.....

Well.................a year later..... with New Mini Starter, and it happened again..... tried to leave show and it would not start, although unlike previously it does click..... car was sitting for about an hour after 90min drive..... after a few tries, it started up fine. Did 90 min ride home, got into garage, turned it off, it restarted fine 1 time...... now, again..... click no start......

Frustrated......

My Optima battery is 15+ years old...... I guess I should load check it, maybe when hot it wont handle the load of the starter...... not sure at this point....
