Default oil filter/pressure

Because of clearance with headers I was using a Delco PF 61 filter and 10-30 oil. Cold start press was 70psi.@idle and 60psi at cruise speed when hot.

I changed the oil to a semi-synthetic 10-30 and used a Delco PF 61E. Cold start press was 65psi @ idle. After reaching temp the cruise press was only 40psi going as low as 20psi at idle.

I changed the oil again but used real oil no synthetic this time. Also used another PF 61E. Same results with low pressure and only 30-35 at cruise speed.

I've read that the 'E' filters are junk. Could the filter be causing the low press I now have? Would the filter cause a 30 psi loss in pressure when hot?

Should I see an increase in pressure if I use a different filter like NAPA gold?

The "E"`s are junk. The economy line.

If you think it`s the filter causing the pressure drop, change just the filter and find out.

A GOOD Oil Filter is a "Car Guy's" best friend.

The engine was trying to tell you it was not happy.
Thankfully you were listening.

There is now. In this regulation nation, everyone is trying to go cheap.

I read that the E filters are the cheaper quality and are the ones you will find at places like Walmart. The non E filters are still available at good parts stores.

I'm going to try a NAPA gold.

The "E" stands for Enviroment - not Economy.

It's a "greener" filter, which is easier to recycle. The design eliminates adhesives and related volatile emissions. They also have increased filtration media for greater dirt holding capacity.

Over the years I've tried at least half a dozen undersize or shorter filters to clear the headers on my 455. Very mixed results with them for oil pressure and how fast the oil pressure gauge responds to a change in engine rpm.

I've settled on using a Baldwin filter without the bypass inside of it. I get higher and more consistent oil pressure readings, and the gauge responds instantly to any change in engine rpms.

I would also mention here that I've had several of the smaller diameter filters fail in use, even though they were highly recommended by others using them, so I avoid that deal all together......Cliff

I've also had good luck with Wix filters.. the 51522 is my choice because of headers.
Nominal Micron Rating: 21
Burst Pressure-PSI: 290

I guess if you compare different filters that ýou will see a change in psi if the micron rating is lower/higher.

The parts guy should have made it known. Tell the parts guy you want the premium filter. Baldwin are good , so are Wix

Many lube shops use the economy filter to compete with a low oil change price. If the wife uses a quick lube center, send her with a premium filter.

DON"T under any circumstances use a Fram filter on anything.

I run a Baldwin B30. It's a smaller diameter filter that's longer. It clears my headers and has a touch more capacity than others I'm aware of.

More importantly, it's a nice red color.

Once again, the "E" does NOT stand for Economy. It stands for Environment.

The PF61 has been superseded by the PF61E. If you find a store that has a PF61, it is just old stock. ACDelco doesn't make an "economy" filter line.

I'm not trying to say that the ACD is the best filter out there, just trying to clarify what the "E" stands for.

I'll have to check the part number on the Baldwin filter I'm using. I think it's B-34, but will look later today to make sure. It's full diameter, but about 1/2" shorter than most others so it clears the headers nicely.....Cliff

i've used HP2 and HP5's with no problems, love those beefie cases
never had oil pressure issues either
i also have used the KN's and haven't had issues, except i just never seem to have luck using the nut to remove the filter seems to strip out on me, always need the filter wrench, same goes for the one i use on my wife's vette
when i used the AC delco filter the gauge would read less at idle, swapped either a HP5 or 2003KN and it went back up
in the hotter weather i'll use 10-40, when it starts to cool down more i'll use 5-30
the 10-40 holds steadier pressure at idle
i don't believe there is a wix racing filter that fits the stock housing and round port headers
i may also check into the system1 or canton filters, to be able to inspect and clean

Stated- "fram HP 1 or 2 but after reading up Fram filters are dead to me"

The HP series is not the same as the 'regular' Fram junk filters.

The NAPA 1045 is a popular 'small' filter for header use.

Baldwin B-30 will fit when headers are an issue. Smaller diameter 3in. as opposed to
3-11/16 on B-39 & B-9. I have always used the K&N HP-2006 as it is long with the small diameter like the Baldwin B-30 on my TA with Doug's headers. Never had any pressure issues with the K&N and I like the strength of it.
