what style antenna goes with an am fm ....I think the solid one
was on my 68 ragtop with fm ... but that was 30 years ago

what antenna for a 69 with am ??

one has a ring around the tip ..... seems unique...

the telescopics fit ??

the solid fits ??

the 69s are called elliptical and they work on just about everything GM in 69 with that style antenna..like camaros etc..not rare...not hard to get...but in demand. ive sold dozens of NOS for around 150 or so...at 125 they sell instantly..some people get 400,...but could wait a year for that....who knows what the grooved will bring NOS...they only made them for a short time and it seems not many made it into the service parts system...the groove is an early version..some people say assy line..but its been proven its just early..

my 68 GTO with a factory installed am/fm did not have a solid antenna and it seemed untouched but who know if it was or not..i didnt buy the car new...

i just checked...according to the parts manual and the GTO resto guide..no solid antenna in 68..which i was pretty sure...its a telescoping..never seen or heard of a solid antenna on pontiacs til the 90s,,but i'm no expert..and there are 6 antenna options and part number possibilities in 68...am and am/fm have a diff part number...i dont have the time to break it down right now...but i know this..on most GM cars the FM antenna is always longer...ie...standard is 3 section fm is 5 ( not sure the number of sections are correct..its just what i seem to recall...it may be 4 and 6 i dunno)...just examples...i cant remember right now..its all in the resto guide #2

you should invest in a GTO resto guide...i like edition 1 but i found this antenna info in the 2nd..

Attached are pictures of my 69's antenna. The mast is NOS, but the remainder is original. I have an am radio.

My Dad purchased a 69 LeMans new with the same "groovy" am radio, and it had the same antenna.

I have believed that 69's used the tip with the groove. I thought the same antenna was used with am/fm, but I am not positive since I only end up with am radio cars it seems!

That just about strips my antenna knowledge. I have not heard that the groove tip was a 69 early production item but maybe so. My 69 is 1C so it was still used then.

the grooved mast is super nice possibly NOS its so straight n clean at the base ..doesnt look used at all ..so thats cool ...I will put that with the nicest base
that I have .. and best bezels

and then keep 1 nice solid mast and nice base and chrome bezels for a set ...sweet .... and move the rest

if you are basing the solid mast antenna on what the parts place is pushing..it doesnt mean its correct...i dont believe its correct..i have never seen a solid mast on a 68 gto...but i havent seen them all.....maybe the base am radio would have it..but i am curious and will dig a parts catalog out

but fms would have a telescoping...they had weak station signal and you would need as much antenna as could have out on the hiway

To the contrary AM reception works best with the antenna as high as possible but FM (frequency modulation) works best at 31" to match the constant height of the transmission wave. Having the antenna too high while listening to FM creates flutter-echo type problems.

This is why all cars starting in the 70's switched to shorter antennas when AM/FM radios became the norm.
