On my '70 GTO I'm working on swapping out the stock steering box for a Jeep GC box. It's not ready for the swap just yet (rebuilding the GC box) but I did have the lower steering shaft out of the car to check that using the stock u-joint with an '88 Chevy truck shaft would work, which it will. What I found at the stock u-joint kinda surprised me; the stock female u-joint was missing at least 2/3rds of the splines, however the male end on the column is just fine. A repro part isn't available from the quick search I did, so I ended up getting a Borgeson joint that fit perfectly, after some bench grinder time to extend the "DD" shape of the shaft to the end. I'm wondering if this is unusual wear, or has anyone seen this happen? The scary part is if the rest of the splines went, no steering, although I think some kind of feedback or vibration would give you some kind of warning.
