Default Show me a pic of your tip!

Now that I have your attention, I was wondering if I could see some close up pictures of your exhaust tip. I don't know if my exhaust is aftermarket, or was an option, but I do not have the regular tips that come out to the bumper, but mine more or less become turn downs right at the back of the fuel tank. I don't think the factory tips would be long enough if I cut the exhaust right before it goes to the turn downs, but no website ads for the GTO exhaust tips show the length which is odd for sure. I did take a tonne of pictures at the car show just for this sole reason but I ended up accidentally smashing my phone.

This is what '69 exhaust tips are supposed to look like. I'm always amazed that so many restored cars have them mounted wrong!

While this link may not be 'according to Hoyle' correct...You may find it pretty helpful. Scroll to the bottom for '69s...

Keep in mind that the chrome tips were a dealer option even on the GTO. Standard exhaust were just turned down at the rear bumper.

Thanks for the pictures. I am not too obsessed with having it factory, but it appears the pair of factory replica tips is as cheap or cheaper than any others.

Here is a picture of my car as it is now. It looks like the dumps can't just be hacked off and new tips put on as the new tips aren't long enough to reach the bumper. Looks like they will have to add another pipe to get it long enough.

My exhaust system is from Pypes. I noticed that their tailpipes are a little different than an original or MOST replacement tailpipes. I DID have to do a little cut and rework to my tailpipes to get the stainless tip to come even close to the bumper. I guess my point is,...you will need to do work to any and probably all tailpipes tomake them work how you want them to look.

I was not really looking to make them look factory. This is just how they came out.

Let's just clarify something here....Tailpipe- the portion of the exhaust from behind the muffler to the rear of the car.
Exhaust Tip- The tip which mounts to end of the tailpipe. Could be chrome or a turndown.
Here are the Pypes tailpipes with their turndowns...which I cut a little. I really wish they'd re-design the tailpipe portion for the '68-'69 to be correct. I don't like that portion that is visible below the lower quarter.
I suspect that the '70 tailpipe might tuck up where it is supposed to be but still not sure it would work to get the correct angle for the '69 chrome tips.

exhaust tip is what it in question. Looks like the angle of my pipe is just too wrong to fit a 69 tip

Don't forget guys, the 1969 model was the first to use the scalloped tailpipe. The pipe was cut an angle AND there was a partial round portion removed from the "top" of the pipe to aid in scavenging exhaust gases away from car in motion. It is almost like the wanted the bottom of the pipe to parallel the ground. Look at right pipe - you can see the angle AND the cutout at the top of the pipe. 1968 had no cut. The pipe remained round and angled down to pavement (not visible under extensions) like any cylinder.

Thanks for jogging my memory Greg. My tips are from Pypes, my tailpipes are from Pypes.
I got them both thru Ames. NEVT42 is the Tip number. It is different than the downturn NPVD10.

Not to hijack, but how do the Pypes tips attach? A band clamp?

So what is the final decision for what would fit on my car? I wouldn't mind deciding so I can order it up

Oops, I just read steveinmontana's reply. I guess work no matter what is to be expected. I will just try the factory-esque tips and go from there. Thanks for the help. I do have all winter to figure these projects out, so that gives me some time

They are 2 1/2" and slip over their tailpipes. Then I welded.

Personally, I prefer the '69 style tailpipes as pictured. IF I were going to go with a factory style chrome tip...again, I prefer the '69 style over the '68 'trumpets'.

I think I should just forget it and find some decent looking tips that would work and look nice. I thought the 69's came with the trumpet looking tips and not those turn downs, judging by that link that was posted up top. I do like the ones in the picture that you are talking about better though

I approach my car with the 'day two' mentality. Put whatever you like on there just like guys did back in the day. I had some straight, plain-Jane chrome tips on my first one back in the early '80s and it never even crossed my mind as to whether they were 'correct' or not. They looked good to me.

I think that's what I have to do with this. I think price, ease of getting a good fit, and looks will have to do. Unfortunately a lot of them I like have the angled cut like the Mustangs. It must be my Mustang roots coming through, but last thing I want is my car on that website showing what not to do to the GTO exhaust tips
