I finished installing my upper and lower control arms and Moog Springs. The driver's side spindle moves freely through its arc (with a heavy tug) but the passenger side is binding big time. The only way I can move it is by whacking the tie rod knuckle with a dead blow hammer. It is really tight and I don't know what the problem could be. The ball joints moved freely before installing and were well greased also.
Is it possible I need to add more shims to the upper controls arm cross shaft for more camber and this is causing the binding? The only difference is I have 3/8" of shims on the driver's side (that moves freely) and ran only 1/4" on the side that is binding (ran out of shims). Let me know what you think. [IMG] [/IMG]

Did you check the freedom of movement before you installed the springs? Should easily move, if not then the cross shaft bushings are tight.

jack up the LCa a bit, see if the upper ball joint is binding.

Scarebird, I did exactly that and all is good. Thanks, I was wondering what was up with that.
Wish I had painted the spindles with black epoxy paint instead of cast iron gray ... too late now! On to the next project, tire rods, center link and idler arm, mount rotors and calipers, install Hitachi starter, new battery cables, clean up the underhood wiring mess the prior owner left me (installing a power post for distribution and fusible links) and then head for the alignment shop (on a trailer). |
