Default Get to find out.?

I had to use my extra engine this year because I had some problems with the 462 in the car last year. I blew both head gaskets last year & then after replacing them The car ran good for about 15 miles & then smoked so bad I couldn't get it to stop. I thought I had filled the exhaust with coolant & oil, so I replaced the mufflers & cleaned the pipes out. But no better. I have no idea why that happened so I finally get to take it back to the machine shop so they can figure out what is wrong with the block or if anything is or if it just washed the rings out so bad & maybe stuck them in the ring lands causing all the smoke ?? I don't know as the block looks good & everything that I can see look to be in good shape. I made a deal with the shop to be able for them to look it over & let me pay a little bit at a time for what ever they seem to find & repair If anything needs it. There a little slow this month so their going to help me out which helps them out to. Hopefully in a week or so I'll know what happened to the engine & what I'll need to be able to get it back in. This is the engine that I had in when I went 11:72 @ 116 mph. It ran good & pull like a freight train. Right now all I have in the car is a 400 + .60 over, same heads E-heads RAIV cam, Eldo performer RPM intake, roller tip rockers, RA IV exhaust manifolds, double roller chain & gears, TRW forged flat top, Pertronix ign. topped with a Q-jet(800cfm) with 3:73 rear gears & an M-22 rock crusher. It runs good but not like the 462 did. We'll see what happens before Christmas now ???? All good I hope. !!!!

Fingers crossed for you, I do hope they find the cause of the smoke!!!!! You might want to think about paying for some Dyno time before you stick it back in the cat though. I know its about $500 but if it still smokes after the shop is done with it at least you won't have spent a weekend putting it in, and another pulling it out to find out.
Was it oil smoke? I would suspect Valve Guides, What heads are on it? I had a shop knurl original valve guides and they lasted about 200 miles before they wore and the engine smaked like crazy.

Well, I didn't get the engine in until today at the machine shop. While talking to Ted the head tech at this place I was telling him about the engine & what it was doing a couple of days before & then after when I had replaced the head gaskets, then all the cream colored smoke. He looked quickly at the block & a couple of the piston. I brought just a few fro him to look at, along with the crank to be polished to. While telling him all I could remember about what happened & was happening after I replaced the head gaskets. He kept making little noises while looking at the block which actually made me think there was some really big problem. The he said,,,,,, did it over heat ?? I said yes , he asked how bad & all I could say was it got hot. He stuck 1 of the pistons back in a hole & asked if they came out real easy. I said , yes a few almost fell out when I turned the block over to take the pistons out when I unbolted them. Now , maybe good news. He said they would mag the block to make sure the block isn't cracked anywhere but he said you may not have really any more problem then the rings were over heated & collapsed. They will mag. the block & check it over to make sure everything is straight & then may only have to do a quick hone on the cylinders & clean it up as just looking & after what I told him & what he see's to start The block may not be hurt at all. I tell you now I feel a lot better right now. Just to have the machine shop bill some rings & bearings & a gasket kit , I'll have my 462 back together. Really my only worry right now is the little scratches on the a couple of the cylinders, but I think those are just ring scratches. I felt very good when I left there. Now it will take a week or so to know for sure , but Ted knows his stuff & I'm hoping he correct about this to. Just FYI to let you know what this engine is. Starting with the block ,455 +.30 over, SRP forged light weight pistons, Eagle H-beam rods, Eldo. Alum. heads 87cc, 1:65 Comp Cams roller tip rockers Crane Blue Print RA IV cam, Performer RPM intake, Cloyes double roller chain & gears, Pertronixs ign., topped with an 800 cfm Q-jet that I've worked a bit, & of course it's in my 73 GTO thats an M-22 4 spd. with Shaffer 3:73 rear gears & the RA IV cast iron exhaust manifolds to Thrush turbo type mufflers, not the round kind but they look like a reg. 9"X18" oval muffler that stops at the rear axle. I have 295/50-15's in the rear & 235/60-15's in the front. PePboys tires which are actually Generals.Raised white letter. This engine in the car 2 years ago with these tires with different mufflers went the 1/4 mile at 11:72 at 116 mph. Not to bad. I have my spare engine in it right now. I had a short block ,, 400 + .30 over sitting on the shelf. I used all the parts from the 462 that I could for the 400 & it runs good , but no where near as fast or as much torque as the 462. But it does sound good & I would only guess at this one. It might go 13:10's in the 1/4 mile. I want my 462 back. Maybe this winter ?????? Oh by the way. I can pull the 400 out & install the 462 back in & running in about 6 hours. This engine compartment has lots of room. Plus it's been in & out every year for something or another.
