I made a barn for my daughter for her herd of 16 Breyer horses. I have built three other barns but this one was special, I decided to build a scale model of an Amish style barn all post and beam construction. I went and checked out some barns here locally and think I got it down pretty well. I had to make a couple custom tiny mortising chisels and doo-dads.
No nails at all just rock maple pins (made those too) holding it together. I used some of the last of my stash of local black cherry wood that I have been saving. With the exception of using a band saw to resaw the boards into planks and siding this was made all by hand no power tools. What do you all think?

the frame-40+ hours, the hardest part was getting it to open up and keeping it all square. it would have helped if I made plans first!! I just winged it based of trying to maximize waste of wood. It measures 33x22x22


stalls installed, making sure the barn still closes lol!!


roof rafters, ridge beam and siding going on. I know it should need way more rafters but hey, its a toy barn.



stall doors going in, yes I did use nails for these but I found some great old hinges!!


getting there, decided to use some thin birch ply for the roof after my bandsaw blade committed suicide.


2500 hand split cedar shingles, 9 hours there. I decided to add a cupola last minute.


I found a great weathervane!! the whole reason I decided to add the cupola! being that im weird I decided to make it functional too.


Hayloft door, I added a walnut pulley I made on my lathe, that toy hay is heavy, haha. Also found some great hex signs! love that stuff.


And the reason I spent about 60 hours on it, sharpened tools I haven't used in forever and decided this would be my masterpiece of toy building. My little girl Olivia.. She said it was the best Christmas ever!!

I don't know most of the Amish around here found a loophole in their rules. They have cell phones and if they do have a house phone it's on a pole on their property that they rent. I went to an Amish manufacturing plant near Kidron Oh and here was a big new pole barn probably 100' X 200' where they make horse drawn plows and next to it was a new house. The man of the house was vacuuming the hallway with an electric vacuum hooked to a Honda generator on the porch. So keep the faith she might just call after all

There are a lot of the Amish like that around here. You see them smoking on their break outside the RV factory, playing with a smart phone. They drive vehicles for work, they have the house phones in a small shed by the road, they have voice mail, etc. This picture was taken outside Shipshewana Indiana, a very large Amish community.

The Amish adherence to the "nothing modern" mantra depends on their bishop. My friend, Amos, and his community pretty much stay by the old traditions except of the community phone and using propane to run saw mill equipment and to cook with. The odd cases are the Amish in N. IN. They have electricity to run their wood shop machines, but light the shops with gas jets. Make THAT make sense...
