Default Factory Mats - 70-72 A-Body

I just put these original green mats in the back of my '70 Tempest bench seat car. I'm quite certain they're correct, but I wasn't expecting them to be so big. There are cutout likes on the back, but those supposedly were only to be used in bucket seat cars.

My guess is that these mats (being universal for the model year) are just bigger than they need to be for an A-Body. Is this your experience as well? As you can see in the second pic, they "float" over the rear floor plan and bunch up if you push down on them.

For reference, here's a pic of the reproductions:

Years ago my wife bought for me a set of rubber mats that look like those, they also were too big. She doesn't remember what vendor they were purchases from. I never did like the look and sold them for almost nothing on EBay.
I can't remember if mine had the word Pontiac on the fronts.

Thanks! I love the Tempest interior. It's so nice and original that I thought it'd be a nice touch to track down some factory green mats.

There are more pics in my thread here:

Kyle that's just the way those mats were! I agree your car looks great. I watched it for a couple years, but just couldn't pull the trigger on it as I have too many already. Glad someone got it that will give it love! Here are some picture's of my '71 post Lemans that I sold few years ago! Forgot to ad that this was a 45,000 mile car, should have never sold it?

I have the repros from Ames in my car. The front passenger is the only one that fits very well, all of the rest have some degree of puckering. For the rears, I curl the front-outside corners (nearest the bench seat brackets) up towards the seat when installing them and they sit down in the floor mostly alright. They still pucker a little bit, but not terribly. I'll try and get a pic tonight. I've tried taking a heat gun to them to form them to the floorboard a bit, but so far it hasn't helped. I may resort to just cutting those forward corners.

That looks like a cool car! Color-matched wheels to boot!

Well, that confirms my suspicion! Still cool to have 'em; just interesting that the factory mats weren't a better fit.

Winter Lane of http://www.nospartsfromthepast.com/ came through big time! Check this out! A 1-piece NOS front mat for a 1970 bench seat column shifter Pontiac! I can't believe the condition this thing's in! This'll really set off the factory Tempest interior!

Interesting, I had no idea such a thing existed. Is this different from the rubber mat that you got when you ordered the car without carpet? How does it look/fit in the car?

Yes, this is not a base rubber floor, but an accessory mat intended for bench seat cars (as opposed to a pair of mats intended for a car with console). I was originally looking for a pair of green mats (not currently being reproduced), then Winter Lane told me about this (which I also didn't know existed)!

It's listed here as one of the Pontiac accessories for 1970 ($9.95!):

Oh, sorry. I haven't tried it in the car yet. It has some wrinkles from being rolled up for 46 years, so I'm going to try laying the mat in the sun for a while, then hit it with some Mothers VLR (vinyl, leather, rubber) to protect the rubber. I can't believe how well preserved it is; it's like it's brand new!

Have similar NOS full front Accessory Mat in '71 blue for my GT-37.
Will be using a utility knife and steel rule to carefully cut it down to correct separate front mats. Have performed the same on a '69-70 Sandalwood full front accessory mat, came out perfect.

Is the GT-37 a console car or 3 or 4-speed on the floor?

Car is factory vinyl flooring 455HO T400, was not originally ordered with front floor mats. The dimensions of the front mats are the same, once cut down. For this car, had picked up an NOS set of '71 blue mats many years ago, then let them go with my blue/blue '71 Judge project. Have a lot of time/work in preserving/restoring the original rubber flooring. If the front accessory mats knock the finish off the rubber flooring, the accessory mats will come out and a pair of carpeted front mats will go in upside down.

Finally got some pictures of the mat in the car. As should be expected for a factory mat, it fits beautifully! I'm so glad Winter contacted me with this find! Very cool for a bench seat car!

Winter is a great guy to business with! I just got some NOS mats from him earlier this week. They are great! Your interior looks awesome!
