Default New Pontiacs Allowed at the Pure Stock Drags

The Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race (PSMCDR) organization is announcing the inclusion of select 1975 to 1979 Pontiacs allowed to participate in the best “Pure Stock Drag Race” in America. Due to many folks asking if they could participate and race their ’75 – ’79 performance Pontiacs over the years, we have decided to allow performance focused Pontiacs to the event (this year is September 15, 16, & 17).
The following list of cars may participate:
Year Model Engine Rated Horsepower
1975-1976 LeMans/GP 400/455 185/200
1977 LeMans/GP 400 185
1977 Can Am 400 200
1975-1979 Formula 400/455 185-220 403 when equipped (78-79)
1975-1979 Trans Am 400/455 185-220 403 when equipped (78-79)
Please refer to the PSMCDR web site for the rules, but in a nut shell, you can run a 2-1/2” mandrel bent exhaust system with the muffler(s) in their factory position without catalytic convertors; any gear ratio; stock or close to stock cam (16” vacuum at 1000 rpm); radial tires in 60 series max; stock torque converters (12” TH350/13” TH400); factory transmissions, interiors, bodies, paint color(s), wheels, etc.. Engines can run 1.5 points higher compression (7.6=9.1 max/8.0=9.5 max/8.2=9.7 max); stock or very close to stock cam specs (16” vacuum at 1000 rpm); factory carb (and type for year); heads/intake/exhaust unmodified; max .070” overbore/ .015” stroke increase (from previous machine work) allowed; all belts to operate power steering and alternator (A/C belt can be removed).
We will P&G (displacement), Whistle (compression), and check vacuum on cars that run 13.50 or quicker to inure compliance to the rules.

Why do they get to take off the cat cons. You can't have them as a street car if the cat con is off, by law. If every one else has to be by the rules why do the late models get to change the rules to run.

In my area, anything over 25 years old is emissions exempt. So I have not been running cats on any old Pontiacs for the last 14 years.

It's the same where I live. No emissions inspection for cars that old, so no cats. Outside of local metro area counties, there are other surrounding counties that have no emissions inspections at all.

I wouldn't want to live where they're that anal about antique emissions equipment. I'd have to move .

Rex, 77 Canamman & Grand73Am are correct. Since we (Michigan) don't test, PSMCDR doesn't require the Cats.

(not having read the latest rules)

What are the rules for the older cars, can they use any exhaust on them?

John, you can use a 2-1/2" mandral bent system with stock style body (we don't like flowmasters) mufflers in their factory installed positions, so transverse behind the axle for F-bodies, duals for A-bodies, etc., and they must exit in the factory locations.

For additional info, not all f-bodies had transverse mufflers. For example, my 79 TA's originally came with duals behind a single cat. And looking at the 78 Pontiac service manual, some 78 Firebirds/TA's with 400 engine had the same dual exhaust setup as my 79's.

Grand73Am, Yes that is what we will allow for the '78-'79 F-bodies to run, which gives them a slight advantage, but ever so slight.
