Last weekend made two passes. On the return road I notice oil pressure hanging down at 20 pounds. I realize it was 95 degrees out. But it always cares about 30. Std pump when cold cares 55. When in gear hot cares 30 Goes to 55 down track. Cross the line drops to 20 when let off, that's when accumulator picks it up.
But that day it wouldn't go above 20 bringing throttle up and in gear drop to 5. The gauge on the accumulator read the same thing. Now I'm thinking there something stuck in the oil pressure relief valve. Pulled motor nothing. Drain oil clean. Open at oil filter clean. I did notice oil pump drive attached to oil pump was blue and stuck to pump. No cracks on pump or pick up. Check pin and gear out on distribtor, fine. Any ideas before I have to totally rip this about. The motor was quite as could be, running with that kind of oil pressure. |

It sounds like you could have an internal oil leak, a crack somewhere. If it was my engine, I would get another oil pump, loose the oil lines and fit a direct filter adapter to the block and prime the engine, if you aren't getting good pressure, I think you will need look much deeper.

Thanks Calvin. I did notice when I change the oil before the race . The oil preesure only came up to 40 pounds when I was loading car on trailer. Thought it was odd being cold. I the only thing I havnt check is to see if my oil lines are coming apart inside.

If you do not have screw in galley plugs in the block behind the Cam gear they I would investigate that also to see if they are still in place.

Will do steve. Thanks The damn thing is, I wouldn't have any pressure if it backl out right?. When at the track four days. I tried just once in the morning a couple days in a row praying it fixed itself. Haha. But the pressure was only 20 pounds when start up. I also took off the remote oil filter oil line and tried using air and trying clear any blockage. You always hear oil kick pan in pan. But still no oil pressure.

Look at any bearings when the pan was off?

Not yet. But there's not any metal shaving thru out this whole motor. Nothing in the pan, oil filter. Bottom of motor. Its almost to clean. Meaning took pan off and have tray under motor. Not a drop of oil on catch pan. Its like its wet enough to keep it happy. I tear into it more this afternoon.

Badgto.....if you pull your motor and it winds up being something that will have you out for quiet a while let me know . I will probably be able to scrounge up a stock block motor you could borrow till you get your motor fixed. Let me know.

Thanks Jason. I got a couple things we going to try. Rick has a spare pump and putting a stock filter base on just try to get oil pressure on stand. Nothing hurt so far.

Could probably just be the binding of the oil shaft, causing the problems.
Figure out why it was blued?

Could be. But whyt after 24 passes this year and same pump as last year? In the process putting back together now. And test it on stand. Clean out passages and oil pump.

Possibility of pump regulator check ball sticking or not seating???
Blueing tells me pump got hot... only things I can think of is it starved for oil or clearance got too tight. Heat might have distorted the check ball seat. |

That's what I think, the check ball stuck. But I could find nothing when it came off and I pulled pump off before I turned motor upside down on stand so nothing would fall back in motor. Its not like that whole gear is blue. Just the lower part of that tang where the drive goes on. Maybe a 1/8" is blue if that. I spun after cleaning it up and couldn't get it to screw up.

Well got back together. Bypass oil filter with a single oil line to both fittings. And its fixed!!! Don't know what I did to it and didn't find anything. 50psi on gauge.

Both engines were pulled and checked, I know in one case we directed it to a system one oil filter and a relocation set up from Moroso. Calvin Hill Hill Performance 708-250-7420 |
