I purchased a core alternator for the good code and date for my 68 Firebird. Core looks pretty rough. Can a tech guy restore an alt to exact 68 OEM specs with reproduction parts or do I need to find a date correct alt in rebuilt original condition and swap case? My alt: 1100700-55A

Brian,
I just completed the rebuild on mine a couple of months ago. I have not run it yet, but I don't expect any problems. In short, rebuilding it is simple. You can go to ebay and buy all of the parts you need. I wanted mine to be factory correct looking so I bought an NOS rear bearing, NOS capacitor and front pulley off ebay. The rest were repop parts. I also correctly marked the diodes since you can see them on the backside. I had an ink stamp made for about $10 online and then cut the rubber stamp apart and glued the lettering to the front of two dowels to stamp the diodes. If you want some pictures and the write up I did on this, PM me your email address and when I get time in the next week or so, I'll send the information. Also, you can upgrade the output of your alternator when you do the rebuild and you can't tell from the outside. Just remember that the wiring in our 68s is too small to handle too many amps, so don't go too high on the output. A good idea would also be to install a fuse or circuit breaker on the alternator output wire if you do boost the output. Regards, OJ ![]() Quote:
