I have had satellite for about 15 years. Called to cancel it 2 years ago after the DVR took a crap & I felt ok with local TV only. when I called I was easily talked into 2 more receivers & was given a rate that was hard to refuse .Now the price is through the roof again & I hate the games. I don't think I should have to call & go through that crap again so I think I am done this time around.

So, for you guys that have disconnected, are you streaming shows? or just doing local TV broadcasts? I watch about 30-45 mins of TV before I go to bed & most of the times its just recorded re-runs.

I figured I'm not the only one ready to ditch the service. Finally getting rid of our local phone line too that I have had forever. $40 per month for solicitors to call us. Things sure have changed.

I cut the cord 2 years ago and I have not looked back.

I have the following set up:

1) Amplified Antenna in the attic
2) Multiformat input receiver (single HDMI going into my TV)
3) Xbox 360 for streaming Amazon/Netflix/Youtube/etc
4) Bluray player
5) My Gaming PC (streaming stuff from online)

You will be able to watch easily about 90% of the stuff you can watch now with a subscription, the rest of the 10% will take a little effort, but can be had as well.

And be comfortable with the idea that streaming is not illegally downloading lol

We use:

-Digital over the air antenna for local stuff-picks up about 20-25 channels, only about 5 of which we would watch, but it's FREE.

-Hulu+, good for most all TV shows you'd want to watch. Costs about $8/month

-Netflix, lots of movies, documentaries, and more recently Netflix originals, which have been really good. Costs about $10/month

-Amazon Prime video-has lots of material that's included with our Prime membership. We order a lot of goods online through Amazon and pay for Prime each year for free shipping. I call this one "Free".

-Youtube- There is a lot of free content here as well.

All in all, we don't really miss having cable one bit. I certainly do not miss paying out the nose each month.

We dropped dish 2-3 years back. I called them complaining about the high cost expecting to get the good deal offer but it didn't happen. The person I talked to simply said that he would send me a box to put the receiver and "eye" in and that would be that.
Haven't really missed it and don't miss the $100 / month either.
We had an antenna before dropping dish so the transition was simple.
Now just over the air stations, Netflix and Amazon and getting along just fine.
Watched Barrett Jackson live on line and enjoyed the no commercial feed.

So I am guessing those of you using partial internet connections for TV, you have a pretty robust internet speed? Ours is 15-18mbps down & 1.5mbps up.

Excited to look into this. The one thing I am spoiled with is the series DVR recording. Everythime there is an episode of interest, its in my list. so I get to watch the shows I like, when I want. But, there is honestly just a few of them.

FWIW, I have no problem with paying for subscriptions. The amount we pay per month now would go a long way in other services

I dumped subscription TV 6 years ago.... don't miss it at all. plus at $120 a month, i've saved $8640 over the last 6 years. If that doesn't motivate you, nothing will. Just using an antenna on the roof , with occasional Netflix, which i am splitting with my daughter.

Im getting close. Football was about the only thing I still watched on Direct TV. But now this year you can get Sunday Ticket on Xbox or PS4 etc. Ive been an MLB.tv and NHL.com subscrber for years. Its superior to the cable packages. Especially MLB. They have been way ahead of the curve for internet packaging.

I watch a lot of shows on sites like solarmovie.sc

That being said those sites come and go. So when one goes down you find a new one. I watch documentaries on youtube on my smart tv while im going to sleep.

Irritating part about that is they continue to stream after I fall asleep and their related programming is questionable. Ill go to sleep watching a WWII documentary and wake up to some neo-**** stuff talking about how hitler had it right or something. Its irritating.

Once our base content DirectTV contract is up in Nov, will be considering dumping it. Problem is dumping DirectTV & keeping ATT hugh speed Internet alone, price goes up on Internet portion to $60-70 a month. We've had Netflix, off & on, for last 3 years, & other than a few movies & a few Netflix original series, once we watch the series, the rest of the content, we just don't watch much. Similar deal on Amazon, we've been watching it free for last 3 months, & there just is not that much on there that commands our attention.

What I'd like to know is how anyone is streaming ESPN, ESPN2, FoxSports channels?
What does it run extra per month?
Let's say I can get those networks on SlingTV, it's going to be $20 a month + high speed Internet, so once one averages it out, looks like we are saving $20 a month, not necessarily a bunch of $$

I killed cable TV probably about six years ago.

I would guess that I pay a little more than most who dumped cable, but it's because I still have my Tivo.

I use:
Digital over the air antenna into my Tivo, and Netflix.

The only problem with digital over the air versus the older analog over the air, is that before when the reception was weak, it would be fuzzy, now it's choppy at best.

I also have internet that was formerly connected to a Playstation 3 console for access to Netflix (Playstation and if I recall correctly, Nintendo (WII) grants free access to Netflix, where as Xbox requires a 'gold' (monthly) membership for access to netflix).
Since I upgraded from my older CRT TV to a smart tv, I have direct access to Netflix from the TV.

In the end it comes down to what you need;
Most providers (at least around here) charge aprox $50/month for internet.
Ontop of the internet fee I have Tivo ($15) and Netflix $8).

I have contemplated killing my Tivo subscription.

We added a 60" smart TV that has it all built in. Cut cable 2-1/2 years ago and don't miss it at all. Thought I needed cable, but I really didn't.

The Channel Master DVR+ is an extremely popular DVR with cord cutters. It is made specifically for OTA (antenna) channels. It works like a Tivo in that it has a guide that you can select recordings from, select series recordings, etc. Best of all, it is a one time fee. There are no monthly charges like a Tivo.

Just make sure you have a good anti-spyware software OR can use an adblock software to hide the html behind the ads

Almost forgot, there is also Kodi, it used to be named XBMC, I learned about it from one of my friends who was in the Military. You just install the program and then download the repositories and stream away
