Not the Ford V8 variety! Had a interesting surprise this afternoon; a coyote the size of a small German Shepherd in my front yard, not more than 50 ft from the house. They (coyotes) are pretty normal in this section of Indiana, but one this brazen and large is a little unusual. I call IN DNR (Dept. of Natural Resources) to inquire as to their suggestion on how to handle my "visitor". They suggested that IF the sheriff's dept had no problem with gun fire in a semi populated area, "take it out" (kill the coyote). I don't have a problem with that IF it presents itself as a threat, but I'd rather have an alternative method of dealing with him/her. Any of you guys ever dealt with this? Is there an effective repellant?

unless i caught one doing something bad..id never even consider killing one..they are valuable to the eco system in the area they habitat...

last year i saw a pack at the edge of my property with pup..(yes i live in Kansas City....as in the city)...i couldnt find the den..but they where there for a few months..i went door to door and told everyone they where there, especially my neighbors with babies..

one good thing..i havent seen a stray cat for over a year..and we are over run with them..and no deer all summer either..

if i had toddlers and saw one in the yard looking them over...well..then id be weary..

They have turned into a pest here. One guy close to a local city found a large den. The den had 50 empty dog collars in it. Gee, I wonder where Fido and Fluffy went. Like you, my Sister-in-Law had one challenge her in her driveway. Now, I am working on a solution. Ordered a night vision scope and a new 243 Remington.

They will always be with us, the more you kill the more pups they have. They definitely take out the stray cats and dogs as well as fawns. My son was grouse hunting a few years back and two chased his fifty pound setter back at him. He killed one and the gun jammed. They would have killed the dog easily. Another time my grandson was walking a different setter behind their house when a coyote attacked the dog feet in front of him. He beat the coyote off with stones. I don't go too far from the house without a firearm.

They pass through my backyard from time to time. I'm in the middle of a residential area but with enough undeveloped area to get you over a couple of blocks to a power line. Coyote freeway. I had conversation with a woman that discovered there were coyotes in Pleasant Grove when she saw one trotting off with her cat.

A piece of rancid meat hanging by wire about 4 feet off the ground wrapped around a big old treble hook. Of course you'd feel bad if you caught the neighbors chocolate lab.

There are several small children close to me, so I went to their parents and warned them. Like you, I really do NOT want to shoot this animal UNLESS it poses a REAL threat. I was raised you didn't shoot a wild animal unless A.) it was a credible threat or B.) you were going to eat it. Thanks for the info on the wolf urine, Mark. I'll be ordering some.

In Ohio and Indiana there is a new problem, coywolves. They look just like they sound, an oversized coyote that's more aggressive and more brazen. A buddy of mine was out deer hunting this past month and one came across him and just stared him down.

They keep the neighborhood pests (raccoons, rats, etc.) at bay around here. Shooting them is just a waste of time and a mess to clean up. Yell at them if you see them so they know to fear humans (or just you.).

I took my kids (6 and 4) bike riding at a local park a while back, and caught one watching my daughter from 150 feet away. It split after I yelled at it, but I later saw it following us from behind the bushes. We turned around, and it came back into the clearing 150 ft away while it was following us. A good opportunity to teach the kids how to yell and scare them away.

They are very common out here, and I've been around them for decades. They're nothing to be afraid of - but don't let them get near you. If I see one, I yell at it. Beware ones that act strange.

In the mountains of upstate NY they tend to mind their own business, except for eating "outside" cats ... which I'm fine with.

Most healthy 50 lb domestic dogs should be able to handle themselves fine in an encounter with a coyote. And most groups of coyotes wouldn't even think of attacking a group of two or more healthy, mid size domestic dogs. Most domestic dogs are WAY healthier than the average coyote, but probably older and less desperate. They only bother me when I let the dogs out at 2am and I can hear them 100 yards away. Usually a few barks from my dogs and they quiet down.

I like to have them out there ... just not too many, and not too close.

I've always had good luck just convincing the Coyotes that it is dangerous to come around my house. Many of the young adults will come close when exploring their new territory, and a well placed shot a couple feet away from them works great. Most it has ever taken is two encounters and they keep a really good distance.

Sometimes it's easy to misread their intentions when you spot them. Several years ago I was out discing about nightfall and had some Coyotes stalking me. Kind of freaked me out until I realized they were just having dinner of the gophers and mice I was turning up.

Our closest neighbor is a half mile away to the north. East is about 3/4 mile, South is 4 miles, and West is 12 miles. So plenty of open area. They were not only here before me, but it's cool to listen to them at night.

One other story. Years ago our neighbor had a Beagle that loved to run with the Coyotes at night. Very strange to hear all the yipping along with the Beagle howling through the canyons. Every year about mating time he'd come back tore up a little when he was put in his place when trying to be a little too much Coyote like.

Coyotes don't bother me at all, but I'm not fond of the mountain lion that comes out of the hills and sulks around every now and then.

They will mate with domestic dogs and have seen a few German Shepard/ Coyote mixed animals.
Some packs will lure male dogs out using a female coyote, then attack and kill/ eat them. Lead poisoning ( 22 caliber or larger) seems to work well.

We have them around here but they seem to maintain a large territory because they aren't around ALL the time. Saw one mom moving her den one Sunday afternoon a few years ago while I was on the couch watching the race. She was heading down the tree line at the top of the driveway with a pup in her mouth, 20 minutes later she's heading back up solo, another 20 minutes, pup #2 and so on. She made 5 or 6 trips that I saw.

We have everything around here, deer, fox, groundhogs, skunks, and Ricky our racoon that camps out on the deck of the treehouse. They aren't around enough to be that bothersome but I don't like it when the dogs are out & we hear them.

They had a New Years party in my driveway a few years ago - left a mess.

We have a LOT of them here, and in some areas they are becoming quite a problem.

They are also cross-breeding with other species. A couple of weeks ago a neighbor shot one that was nearly twice the size as the "average" coyote. I'll see if I can get some pics. He said it was watching him every time he went to his tree stand to deer hunt, but on a ridge several hundred yards away.

He took his 7mm mag with him on the last day and shot the coyote instead of deer hunting. He claims it's over 50lbs, but I didn't see it or the pics yet.

We seldom have encounters with them here as I have two large dogs over 100lbs and they LOVE to chase down and kill the young pups if/when they fall behind the rest of the pack and start crying. They sound they make is something you will never forget, and my dogs purk up and take off like lions headed for a fresh kill!

The adults are really smart, and this behavior has educated them enough to stay well clear of my property. I haven't cut a coyote track in the snow now in several years.

There is a den "complex" about 3 miles from here, and one of my friends put a deer camera on it in the Spring last year. He said they brought in over 30 fawns in the course of several weeks. The farmer than owns that property LOVES it, as the deer cost him many thousands of dollars each year in crop damage.

I've seen the "complex", it's spooky, has 4 entrances and huge PILES of bones/fir/hair outside the main entrance. From what I can see they feed on road kill, and a good many raccoons and ground hogs in addition to the fawns they kill in the Spring.......Cliff

Years ago in Texas, I had a half coyote, half dog mix. It was still semi wild, run. But as Cliff said they are extremely smart.
