Any reason a 68-72 gto tank won't fit my 71? Strangely not showing one for a 71 however OPG has a 20g that fits 68-70 and a 17g that fits 71-73 gto but nada for the gp. My current tank has pinholes from sitting and figured if I'm changing it I may as we'll go smaller for clearance issues I've always had

I have a good used tank out of a '69 Gp which I think would be the same except for the filler neck. I can post up some pics if you're interested.

I'm sure the tank will fit to the car! I don't think the GP straps will hold the GTO tank in place properly. I bet the GP tank is deeper front to back.
I think I have a extra 71' GP tank but it is dented.

ok so if I grab a gto tank and straps I should be fine?

I don't know maybe.......GTO straps may not be the same as the GP straps. So mounting points may be different.

Since my 70 GTO is in the driveway, I can line up the GP straps and check it out.

The GP straps are about 6-8 inches longer than my GTO's gas tank.
So maybe use the GP straps but there will be a big gap at the back of tank.

69-70 GP's had the same basic tank as the 69 Abody but in 71 the A body tank capacity went from 21.5 gallons to 19 thanks to the vapor recovery system so the GP tank was enlarged to 23.5 probably because even with 21.5 gallons range was weak (68 GP had a 26.5 gallon tank) and 19 gallons would have been unacceptable especially with the lower fuel economy of the low compression engines in 71.

Went ahead and ordered a 17g tank and straps for a 71 goat. Like everything else on this car, I'll get it to work

The 71 & 72 tanks are 26 gallons, BTW.

How did you make out with the GTO tank?

Update. The gto tank does NOT fit! Haha. Well not without effort anyway. Gp ttank has divets to accommodate a different strap setup which I could've used but would've put the tank way back towards the diff and defeating the purpose of a smaller tank. I need room there for my exhaust so I cut the two humps out to make it flat. Fill tube is pointing in the wrong direction and will hit the rear crossmember piece so I cut the neck close to the tank and will weld once I change the angle to work. I'll need to rework the factory straps to secure properly but not to involved. Nothing's bolt in that's for sure!

Been down that road! Had the same problem with my 1970 SJ, with California Emissions. I had a 26 gallon tank with all the vacuum return lines. I couldn't find a tank so I had mytank rebuilt.
As for the straps I had the same problem. could find a new straps anywhere? so what I ended up doing was I bought two sets of straps (for a 19 gallon tank). with the tank in place, took one strap and connected it to the front body harness (on each side) and just before the strap started to run back along the bottom of the tank I bent the strap on a 90 degree angle and cut off the remaining strap 1 inch past the 90 degree bend. the second strap I installed on the rear body harness, at the point where the partial front strap and the rear strap meet I bent the rear strap at 90 degrees and cut the rear strap 1 inch past the 90 degree bend. with the two 1 inch straps face to face I welded the straps together and bent back the 1 inch portions to the main strap and welded it, in order to blend with main strap. I hope that helps?
