It's the most fun you can have on a weekend lol. Remove all vent connections, vacuum hoses. Remove the clamp behind passenger kick panel that seals the ac box to the evaporator that's installed behind the door hinge pillar. The clamp is one 7/16" on the bottom and 5/16" on the kick panel side. Rotate it up to remove it from the rest of the sealing clamp. I believe there is a bolt or two under the dash but I can't remember. Next remove the blower and housing from the passenger side firewall. There are roughly ten speed nuts on the firewall that need to be removed. Firewall side. Once the ac box is free pull it out from under the dash, don't forget heater core hoses lol. Once you get it out there are about 8 or 10 1/4" screws to separate the fibre section from the steel section. Four 1/4" hex head screws hold the heater core in. Install in reverse. This is how I got mine out. It may be possible to get the fibre section off of the steel section but I was tearing a car apart so everything was coming out.
If this is possible, remove the kick panel clamp as i stated and unbolt the fibre section from the metal section. There is usually rot at the evaporator so you may want to check that. The fibre section is most often cracked where it goes to the evaporator. I guess I stated the hard way first my bad Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thanks for the tip. The service manual is worthless for a description, basically just do it. I guess Pontiac or GM engineering never heard of serviceability. I worked for a major auto manufacturer for 34 years, and when we had a issue like this one poses we would get the engineers down to the engineering garage and make them do the procedure so they could change things in production cars. After some bloody fingers and arm scrapes they got the message on how to service and replace a serviceable part!! We also showed our illustrators exactly how we wanted manuals drawn so when we said to remove this nut or bolt it showed exactly which one was to be taken off.
