Default Cam question. Crane h-296 ?

I just found one of these cams locally. I have two 400s and a 455 what would be best for this cam ci wise ? The heads are either 13s or 96s. At this point it's all been tracing as I still don't know what direction to go with the motor. The car is a 73 Ventura. I would like to get mid to low 12s out of it obviously faster would be better. The transmission will probably be a four-speed or 700r4.

http://www.cranecams.com/product/car...detail&p=24170 That cam would be perfect for your 455 and the 96 heads. In the 400 with 13 heads it would be pretty radical but with enough gearing and good converter it would be fun.

234/242 @ .050" on a 112 LSA.

Agree with 400 Lemans. Some Rhoads lifters would tame it considerably.

I have run that cam in both incarnations of my 455, currently in my .040" over 455 with 6X-8 heads, headers, Pro-comp dual plane and 770 Street Avenger. Nice cam for the 455, would need Rhodes for a 400. I don't run Rhodes lifters in the 455 but it idles fine with my Hughes GM25 convertor behind it. The low overall lift (.473/.488") is easy on the valve train. I have RAIV length valves (2.11/1.77") and pushrods and used Crane retainers, locks and springs (#99838) which set up at 1.7" IH on those valves.

Idle quality is a little choppy but the car pulls hard with a strong mid to top end rush. Even though the .050 durations are similar to the 041, adv duration (296/304) is shorter so timing events are more aggressive. The 041 Cam has 69.5 degrees overlap, the Crane has 76.

Just an FYI. the Crane 296H is the same cam as the "Jim Hand" Wolverine and has pushed his Wagon to 11.40's with iron heads while being very streetable.

Fwiw...that's not accurate information... JH's cam used different lobes than the Crane 296H
