I was just reading in the 64-65 section that the Freemont Data plates on the firewall weren't painted. Is this true for 66 too? If so I need clean mine with acetone.

1966 and 1967 Fremont built cars (BF) had the Data Plate painted black.

I assume tapeing off the aluminum plate was time consuming (during 64/65) so they went Black in the following years.

Thank you for the reply and pic. Our cars were built within a week of each other at the same plant. I had questioned my data tag prior to buying her and posted on gtoforums if it was correct since I usually see "body" and "paint" all the way to the right. Mine has them in the middle. Phs confirmed everything on my car and the Vin is present on the frame. I am curious again on the difference in my data tag. I wonder if it is because of the SPEC code.

What expertise I have is strictly limited to '64s, but this thread caught my eye.

I do not know for sure, but I believe Fremont changed the style of Data Plate they were using precisely between the week your '66 Body Assembly was built (1A) and when the one Chris posted (01B).

This was nominally true for Fremont built Chevelles that same time frame although the early Chevelle plate included the "Magic Mirror" paint statement that is missing on yours.

Since repro Data Plates are easily obtained and often (from what I've seen) produced on "wrong" style blanks, if it was me I would research other early built Fremont '66s to confirm what I'm saying.

It would have nothing to do with the "SPEC" paint and everything to do with the style of Data Plate Fremont was using early year vs. late year.

Same thing happened during the '64 Model Year, a change in the Data Plate style at one or more of the Tempest Plants. IIRC, I recently learned that KC used an early, then a middle, then a late style plate for Tempests in '64.

It is conceivable that the early Pontiac plates at Fremont lacked the "Magic Mirror" statement even while the early Chevelle plates included it but I would research it to be certain.

The later Chevelle plate was identical to the Pontiac style for the one Chris posted.

In 1992 I bought a Fremont-Built '65 that was built around September/October '64.....an early enough car to have the shifter without the 'HURST' logo on it. It had a bare Magic Mirror Data Plate on it.....a good friend still has the car. So, at least in this case, an early '65 had the logo on the plate.

There's a white 65 GTO on ebay that was built in Freemont 3rd week of June. It has the exact same style data plate as mine with Paint and Body listed in the middle.

John V looks to have identified it correctly that they changed the data plates right around the 1st/2nd week in 66.

My December 66 Fremont data plate. Has the same odd punch mark in the top right and the two stamps / punch marks in the middle as Bill's does.
