Do you think this circled area is dented, or typical? Other than the rust pits I will be getting rid of this weekend, there is really no damage at all. Not sure if I should git rid of these of leave them.

Been searching google images & finding a limited supply of picts, put it appears at least the the pan should, or possibly "might" be sort of flat in that area, but maybe not the dents that are there? I also saw a couple picts that looked rounded, but I don't think there were 68 pans. drain was on the side. I realize this area is fairly hidden from sight by the frame, but easy to correct if its wrong now... Not so much later on

It's dented.
I'd fix it, the crank might hit it. Examples of oil pans that haven't been damaged: 1964 421 HO oil pan. ![]() 1959 389 oil pan. ![]() Same 1964 pan after painting.

Looks like that Lamnas guy was working on it!
Those two lines look just about right to match a 2X4. |

So are you guys thinking it shouldn't even have the flatter area under the windage tray?
Or are you saying just get rid of what looks like dented lines in that area? I was only really questioning the dents, but never considered it was not supposed to be flat. That looks fairly intentiaonal especially from the inside. Do you have any of this style pan for reference by chance? & do you know what years it was used? Amazing how deep the sump areas are in those early pans. Never realized that before. ![]() Here's a pict from the inside.

That sort of dent happens when a V8 sags in a 67-69 Firebird, I suppose due to motor mount plates.

If it were mine, I'd definitely take them out.
Seems I see some dings in the sump area also? |

Scott, do you know what year that pan is? I noticed mine has two reliefs that I don't see in yours, but maybe those are an anomaly from when the metal is stamped & not something that was ever on purpose. I took the two line looking dents out of my pan, but it no doubt is a little flat in the center. not as prominent with the dents removed, but no way it could ever have been rounded like those earlier pans. I'll post some picts later. Its looking pretty good.

1969 pans do have sort of a ridge in that area but they can be dented there, as previously mentioned Fbirds with weak mounts will compress into the frame and engines that are put on the floor with a block of wood to keep them upright get a dent there. You normally get away with it in a 350-400 but with a 428 or even more so a 455 the longer stroke can cause contact there... not good!
