I would say that is sign of accident repair, probably when the car was almost new.

The welds on the rear up and over the rear end are factory. The welds you show up front are not. Frame was bent and straightened/pulled at on time

Yep I've seen those funny welds inside slots on the rear of frames.

Yup, not good. He may want to seek out another frame for his car that hasn't been wrecked.

What MARXJUNK said.

At least the damage there is forward of the suspension components, so not as structurally important ... but my guess is if you look at the major frame curve behind the control arm area you will find it's been kinked there and straightened. It almost always kinks there if hit hard enough to need the horn replaced. Looks like was done with stick, hooked up to a cheap buzz box, by a bad welder than never cleaned anything first.

The upside is ... it is metal. Anything metal can be fixed by a competent welder. Grind all the mess down to flush metal and reassess the job. A good welder can add the necessary metal, grind flush and you'd barely know it was ever done.

So there is damage on both sides of the front? Frame horn on one side, and to the rear of the control arm on the other??

If so ... wow, surprised the car wasn't totaled. Surprised there isn't dents in the firewall from the engine being pushed back.
