Hi,
Can you tell me what the black plastic part is on the main (front )metering body ? Do I need it? What does it do? Did I install it correctly? this is a 3310-3. I took a pic with the gasket installed. Any comments?

It's supposed to keep fuel from sloshing out of the vertical vent tube under hard acceleration or cornering or braking, depending on which end of the carb it is installed on.
It's upside down in your pic........ The pic I've attached shows the correct installation. We always put them back on. Holley knew what they were doing. Last edited by Joe's Garage; 05-14-2018 at 02:14 AM. |

Hi
Not sure if I already posted his question . Should I remove the bar and ball from the accelerator pump area and install the orange umbrella rubber piece ? Is that considered a decent upgrade / reliability action ? One last question, the dowel pin on my metering block broke off . The block itself is not warped , nor is the center cention . Checked with ruler. Is it possible to still run it and it work correctly with one dowel pin and the 4 screws holding it on ?

Kyle, If you look at the fuel bowl picture you posted you will see that the bowl has an opening for the ball to seat against and a metal bail to trap the ball in a fixed location.
When the accelerator pump depresses the diaphragm the ball seats and the fuel travels out of the pump cavity to the accelerator pump squirter. The newer bowls do not use the ball and seat arrangement. They have a bowl with a stem hole and several feed holes. When the pump diaphragm moves downward because of the spring inside the pump cavity fills. When the accelerator pump compresses the pump diaphragm the fuel travels to the shooter. Your bowl has NO CAPABILITY to use the orange umbrella seal because if you removed the ball and retainer and tried to install the orange stem, where would the fuel come from? you have blocked off the hole where fuel used to enter the pump cavity. Forget about using the orange seal on the older ball and retainer type bowls. Those old pump systems work fine for most applications. Tom V.

Just take a little extra care to make sure the metering block and fuel bowl are lined up correctly when you tighten things down. That way the fuel passages will be lined up with the holes in the gaskets.

Thank you Tom and Joe. I will leave well enough alone with bar/ball. Thank for teaching me.
I used a small amount of black sealer on gasket, no where near any hole, very very tiny amount. Just to hold it for 35 mins or so. Put some weight on it. Let it sit. Then I was able to guide whole assembly including float bowl right into place. I don't think anything moved. I torqued the bolts to spec 40 inch pounds as per manual. Dry float setting 5/16. The only conflicting information is the front jets all over the internet say 3310-3 is 72 in front, however on holley forum, a holley tech wrote back another user( in the 90's) saying 70. He has to be wrong.

I fired it up, much better! no leak. However now I have that dreaded whistle as soon as you rev it, and then rpm comes down it goes away... Well some of the time.
It wouldn't be the result of the "black" anti-slosh thing I installed? I assume no. Carb base plate gasket to center section "looked in great shape" when I took it apart. All 6 screws with correct locking washers tightened. My guess is the intake manifold gasket to 1" spacer, on both sides. I've never troubleshooted a whistle before. The web is correct and the Holley tech is wrong. 3310-0, 3310-1, 3310-2 are listed as #72 jets in the primary. I do not have any books after Holley was sold off years after I left. No reason I can see for them to ever make the jetting 70s was for emissions purposes and the 3310 carbs were not emissions calibrated carbs. Tom V.

Thanks Tom. I'll stick with 72 then. I have a upgraded metering block for the rear and will be looking to replace the 78 jets and go with 75 which was the equivalent (134-21 (metering plate)
Now on to the whistle issue!

First guess like you said, would be a vacuum leak.
I would just remove the 1" spacer for a short period of time and use a good gasket between the carb and intake and see if it goes away. All of the extra nipples on the carb plugged? Tom V.

Yup, th400 vac line to mainfold vac at bottom of carb base plate. Distributor ported advance hose to front metering block. PCV to rear of carb.
I would take the one inch spacer off but my brake booster hose is plumed right into the spacer. I could run a new hose to a "port on Torquer I" however I don't know which port to use? Thoughts? Great idea to remove it from equation. I think all the fuel that dripped over both gaskets degraded it. Crossing fingers.

Because you have a Brake Booster the line for that should be plumbed into either one of the front runner bungs. Because the vacuum is trapped in the booster there are enough vacuum pulses to charge up the booster by going to either front runner.
The PCV system is a different deal You want even PCV vapor to all of the runners so that connection needs to go to the large carb nipple that dumps into the plenum area. Tom V.

Understood, on the torker I intake, I see the two available bungs on the two front runners. None available on the back of intake , anywhere.
On my Performer RPM manifold there are no bungs on the front runners, however there is a perfectly placed one at the rear on the side near brake booster! Cool. Thanks Tom, I'll post my results back .

Hi,
Are either ball in the secondary pod ok to use? Down the hoke where ball goes, I can see the "seat" around the circumference but I do not see a "notch".

I confirmed with holley that it is the small ball. As for the whistle, they said spacer area due to throttle angle. which could be either front or rear throttle angles and or recommend 4 hole spacer.

Again, My experience with the vacuum secondary check ball in the vacuum housing ALWAYS took the larger ball that seemed to just fit into the pocket. Assume the same Holley tech who gave you the other incorrect info?? That very small ball is typically used in the Power Valve Protection hole in the base plate with a "bail" across the hole to keep it from falling out.

Oh, I didn't know that was your experience. One picture online I saw the big balled used too. This was my first call to holley ever. The other tech I mentioned was referring to a post on the holley forum back in what 2001. So no, different tech all together.
Thanks again! Perhaps I'll try another phone call to them this week and ask another tech. Maybe the small/big ball changed based on model #? Anyway. the ball stops the arm from moving up when held in the normal position.

Hi Tom,
In post #15, you will see a picture of vacuum diagram housing. There is a 2 holes, one of them is where a ball goes. I believe it's for blow out prevention. Which ball was my question. The arm I am referring to is the diagram's "rod" . You know, when one goes to test the unit before you put in on your car to see it holds vacuum.. Push rod up, put finger over cork gasket it should hold if no leaks. That's all I'm saying. With the ball there, it plugs the hole, thus you have to wiggle it around until ball moves out of area. You will in the picture a small ball and a big ball next to it, on the table. Second pic, I dropped the big ball into the slot. I decided to run small ball. I've never ran a ball in there before. The other issue/question aside of that, was the whistle. Sorry for the confusion. 1 - check ball size - you say big goes in there, holley tech says small, pics on internet show big one - all rebuild kits give you both. 2 - whistle - carb spacer plate gaskets most likely.. still working on that! I appreciate your help greatly. Thank you
