What is the correct finish for the lower shaft that goes from steering column to steering box?

I believe natural steel. I cleaned mine up and clear coated it.

Maybe it's a assembly plant/supplier issue, but my 68 LeMans shaft is black. The second picture shows it. You can see what's left of the black paint after I took some cleaner/3M pad to it. Don't want to go any further or I'll take the rest of the paint off. The car is an original owner and I know it's never been touched there. The first picture is of the shaft on my 72 original owner LeMans Sport that I just bought. Can't know for certain if it has been altered, but I seriously doubt it.

Yep, in my opinion they were originally painted ... but poorly. Otherwise they would have been universally rust all to heck.
I still remember wiping my 68 down with WD40 to make the black paint shine when I routinely cleaned the engine compartment back in 1976.
But as we have learned ... you never know what they did different from plant to plant.

Mine was black as well. Just wasn't sure if it had been painted over the years.

Mine is black as well. Faded....but still can tell it was black at one time.

mine was all black including the upper housing with a black oxide bolt

My 69 that I've owned for 44 years had a black steering column shaft
when it was built at the Arlington plant.

Interesting, my Arlington 68 had no paint on it whatsoever. It was rusty but not scaly rust

My car is Arlington built....late May. Is painted black. Looks like either way is correct.

I've seen that car in a show here in Georgia and talked to the owner. He's pretty proud of that 'RP' stenciled under the hood.

When I questioned the stencilling...since I'd never heard or read about anyone mentioning that on any other Royal car, someone on this forum pointed out to me that there were two 'Royal' Pontiacs back in the day. The famous one in Royal Oaks, MI.....and the one that sold this car with the stencils. I wouldn't try to tell the owner of that car though...1. I don't know it to be true for myself, and 2. He was pretty stoked about it being a Royal car.
Very nice gentleman too, along with his son.
