want to make sure this is a 428 that I can buy.its fresh rebuild 030 with prob 1000 miles,one piston somehow has broken ring land,didnt hurt cyl. cast num is 9792968,a178 build date,GME on side of block and wg code on front.has 68 16s on it.dont want to dish out the cash if not 428. thanks for any assistance.

Thats a 1968 428 // 375hp for a manual tranny application.
They had an HO version that was rated 390hp. code WJ
Basic structures are the same on both.

Will have 4 bolt mains too.
#16 Heads are also correct. Big valves with screw-in studs and guideplates.

It won't like pump gas unless you dish the pistons. fwiw

Not really.

They made a lot of Pontiac engines every year.
All the castings were done in Michigan , all the engines were assembled in Michigan.

They had more than one mold for 428 engine blocks , as well as the other CID's.
One mold wouldn't make enough blocks to anywhere near keep up.

The GME identifies that mold for quality control purposes.
Date Codes and Day/Night Shift markings are another form of ID towards quality control.

They had no idea we would be using these markings decades later to authenticate matching components.
